Haunted Train Clashing Worlds is the third game in this wonderful series. I own the other two and it is one of those games where the developer takes its time before the next chapter is delivered. It has been well over a year since the previous game Frozen in Time was released in May of 2015. Prepare yourself for another awesome ride on the Haunted Train with Charon, Daniel, and Olivia. Daniel’s wife Olivia had been restored to life by Charon in a previous game and in return Daniel agreed to travel with Charon as he seeks to recapture the condemned evil souls who had somehow manage to escape from Charon’s prison.
As the game begins, Charon is having a nightmare and knows that Olivia is in danger. A rift between time and space has occurred in Amsterdam and Charon sees Olivia and the Amsterdam Museum in flames. Charon has seen this rift before – one that is caused by inhabitants of Shadowland a world that is dying. Professor Alazar of Omega University in Shadowland has devised a plan where he will open a rift that will allow the beings in Shadowland to cross and inhabit the lives of people living on Earth – this time the rift is in 1915 Amsterdam. You, playing the game as Daniel will help Charon save Olivia but when Charon is captured it looks like you are on your own.
When the game first started I wasn’t too sure about the cartoonish graphics but the dream segment graphics soon changed into the excellent graphics that we have in the other Haunted Train games.
Tools include a protective Amulet of Eternal Tranquility that you receive from Charon early in the game. The amulet can help you heal the rifts that you encounter and put a stop to their destructive power. You also have an interactive map that is present at the beginning of the game.
Clashing Worlds contains some very innovative HOP scenes and I enjoyed “puzzling” my way through them. It took me a bit of time to understand how the different types of scenes work and what it was I needed to do to allow me to proceed. What great fun! Then there are the mini-games or puzzles that are different and very good. Some are challenging and others not so much. As a whole there seem to be more HOPS than there are mini-games but since the HOPS are so well-designed it is okay with me.

The CE version of the game includes collectible Omega signs to find, morphing objects called Pearls, can be found in the HOPS, there are achievements, a Strategy Guide, a bonus chapter, Concept Art, Wallpapers, and Music. There is really not much to rave about with the extras but at least the in-game Strategy Guide is helpful if needed.
I love this game and am enjoying it even more than I did the previous game in the series, Frozen in Time. Some might feel that the game is HOP heavy but I love the genre – always have, and probably always will. I found the demo time flew by and before I knew it I was hitting the buy button. Please try the demo to see if Clashing Worlds is one you will enjoy as well. Show less

I will limit this review pretty much to one point, though noting in passing that the graphics seemed lovely and the numerous hidden object games were fun.
But my thought is this that the idea of the haunted train if you think about it makes not much sense at all, especially as it is set out in the introductory song about Charon. It is not impossible to set fantasy events in a world with an inner logic of its own, perhaps even reflecting our actual world as Tolkien for one did so well. But HOPA games hardly ever achieve anything close to that and the Haunted Train certainly does not.
But I like stories of driven outsiders in their vessels, Captain Nemo or the Flying Dutchman, or groups of heros in their refuges such as the various "safe houses" the Fellowship of the Ring stop at (Tom Bombadil, Rivendell,Lorien etc) and the mystical train with the driven ,if not very bright considering how he gets suckered, Charon and Olivia in their train are such a team and I start out predisposed to like the game.
So this rating and recommendation but I am writing the review not just, though partly, to give some support to a game I enjoyed but also to make a point I have not seen quite made about how each of us probably has our inner themes... personal, poetic even...and if we find games that resonate too them we may expect to enjoy them. In my 'current favorites' place this time I put a game which I think can be great indeed if you respond to what it is doing...
so anyway as to the Train, enjoy it if you will...

You are given an amulet from Charon that rids the scene of the darkness so that you can continue in your quest.
Map - there's no need to find it as it's already included. It is clear and transports you quickly.
Strategy Guide - it's on the left hand side shown as a ? I thought I would add this as in previous games I've played I have had so many PMs asking me where it is.
HOS - interactive and unusual, and very good in my opinion.
Puzzles - unique ones so far and not too hard, although I did find one that was a bit time consuming.
43 Collectibles - Omega Symbols. To be honest I am getting tired of games where the collectibles are all the same. A little bit of diversity would make the game far more interesting.
15 Achievements - If you are set on getting all the achievements, don't forget the Spotter Plodder one.
20 Vanquishers - i.e. solve all the puzzles without skipping.
29 Secret Pearls in the HOS which are morphs. Show less

7 CHAPTERS PLUS A BONUS CHAPTER
OVERVIEW: All aboard sci-fi lovers! Can you stop an alien invasion of dark energy possessing people in this 5-star outstanding game? A race of dark robed beings from Shadowland, led by their leader, Alazar, have created a rift between the time/space continuum in order to enter Earth. Their plan is to possess the bodies of inhabitants of Earth before their world crumbles.
In the Big Train Track in the sky on its way to Hades, the spirit of the deceased Daniel is riding with Charon on a haunted train looking down upon this perilous situation. Begin your journey in 1915 Amsterdam to help Charon stop this rift in the space/time continuum and defeat these evildoers. Continue your travels to other cities. Next stop – Dresden!
The game is sensational with a compelling sci-fi story and its own theme song! The graphics are incredibly beautiful with what appears to be hand-drawn illustrations of Amsterdam. It is obvious that a great deal of work went into producing this game. If nothing else, it is eye candy with the demo providing breathtaking scenes of Amsterdam.
The pace is decent. I feel the pace is helped by the addition of innovative puzzles and HOP scenes. This game provides a breath of fresh air from the constant onslaught of assembly-line games from the same developers. One thing I do like about this game is that you are given a percentage of how far you have traveled in this game.
You are given a gizmo “helper.” It is an “amulet of eternal tranquility” which you will use to clear up the dark cloudy scenes which have experienced a disruption in the time/space continuum. You also collect omega signs and pearls.
HOP SCENES: They are very interactive and somewhat puzzle-like. I enjoyed playing these HOP scenes, and to be frank, I hate HOP scenes. The scenes include the same lists of items, silhouette scenes, and storybook scenes; however, some of them have a unique twist to them. You locate items; however, in many instances you must either return them to the scene or interact with the scene in some manner. Be warned! In some cases, it is difficult to see the items.
PUZZLES: There are new approaches to some puzzles in this game and some I have not seen before. The first puzzle is a multiple-step one. There are three separate puzzles in which you work with a painting. Quite ingenious. In the first puzzle you find items and replace them into the proper position. In the second puzzles you must not only rotate circles until they match the scene – you must also resize them to fit the scene. (I have not seen this in a game before). Finally, there is a scene where the circles are moving. You must click the circle as it moves when it is in the correct location. I know I have never seen this in a game before!
There is a slat puzzle to restore a picture, which is somewhat difficult. There is also a logic puzzle in which you must turn off all hexagon shaped lights within a geometric shape. There is a Simon Says puzzle and a matching puzzle which are fairly easy. The last puzzle is a variation of a rope puzzle to light up energy balls without crossing over connecting lines.
LEVELS: Casual, Advanced, Expert Custom
Hints: 0 to 99 seconds Skips: 0 to 199 seconds.
EXTRAS:
You get an “amulet of eternal tranquility” which restores scenes to their original peaceful state.
15 Achievements
Collect 44 Omega signs.
Collect 29 Secret Pearls
Strategy Guide – 66 pages
8 Wallpaper, 8 Concept Art, Music (including being serenaded by a theme song)

It felt like it was a long game but I did wait around for the morphs. But I did skip any puzzle I didn't want to do. So maybe it is long.
Favorite hops-Greenhouse, flowers and stain glass window.
I did feel the hops are harder in this one vs. the last two in the series. But I looked forward to every hop.
The story is weird. Didn't like them using someone's blood.

The Haunted Train has come to a screeching halt in Amsterdam where several dimensional Rifts have opened throughout the city, claiming the lives of innocent people. (it is Amsterdam, gotta wonder, if you catch my "rift") Charon's visions of impending doom have led him to believe that Olivia has been trapped inside the museum during an investigation. Daniel wastes no time getting to work, closing the rifts, using Charon's Amulet of Eternal Tranquility, to clear a path to the museum to save his beloved, before the rifts consume everything, and everyone!
I for one, am tired of this storyline. It seems that once a new storyline is presented, for example, Alice in Shadowland, everyone hops on the band wagon and presents the same "shadowland" plot. Haunted Train is another shadowland themed game, another world domination and destruction game, another game with cloaked bad guys wearing masks with beaks that were worn by doctors during the plague. The graphics are weak, the scenery bland and unappealing, and everything looks the same as the last Haunted Train game. Where's the new here folks? Where's the storyline that has me on the edge of my seat, can't stop playing because I want to learn more about it? Apparently it was sucked into the first rift Daniel closed, this game just doesn't have any mojo, that's why the train stopped!
There are decent features in this Collector's Edition, not "wow" features, but enough substance to convince me to give the game 3 stars instead of 2. For starters, there are 7 Chapters, so it would seem that this is a fairly long game. Each scene has a collectible Hidden Omega Sign, apparently because the name of the planet that is involved in the supernatural rift is Omega. Some, but not many are blended into the scenery nicely. There are also hidden Morphing Pearls in each of the 29 Hidden Object Scenes, that were a nice touch, but I've stated many times that I prefer a good Morphing Object within the games scenes. There are also the usual Achievements to earn, but there doesn't seem to be any unusual awards outside of the normal, make no mistake, use no hint, awards.
The Hidden Object Scenes are typical, with no pizazz, just been there, done that puzzles to solve. Many of the Hidden Object Scenes are duplicated, offering a slightly different style of HOP in the same boring area. There are Interactive List finds, but most are the standard Progressive, Interactive, Silhouetted Shape finds where you find an item that matches the Silhouetted Shape shown, and then use that item back into the scene Interactively. There are also several Keyword Finds in a story, however they are presented as a Mini Game not a HOP. Each of the scenes have a Morphing Pearl to discover, and the pearls are very well hidden in my opinion, as from what I can remember, the cursor doesn't change to say "here I am"
The Mini Games are decent, not too difficult, but mostly variations of Puzzles with tiles. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo:
1) Complete the image by finding and moving 7 pieces to their correct position on a split scene bas-relief, then...
2) Complete the image by rotating the circular tiles, then resizing the tokens using plus and minus arrows, then...
3) Complete the image by moving the misplaced items to their correct positions. (As you finish each of these three puzzles, you get to learn more of the games story)
4) Arrange the decorations so that they are on the correct hats by swapping 3 different sections.
5) Create the image by dragging the picture tiles horizontally and vertically.
6) Stop the machine by turning off all the glowing segments. some segments are numbered and can only be toggled with that specific number.
7) Find items that match Keywords during a pictured story.
8) Repeat the sequence shown by pressing on stained glass sections in the correct order.
9) Drag energy from the crystal balls to light all the gems, some gems can pass through rays, but rays can't cross crystals or each other.
This Collector's Edition has 29 Hidden Object Puzzles with a Morphing Pearl in each scene, 20 Super Puzzles, Character Bios as you progress, 8 Wallpapers, 8 Concept Art pictures, 6 Music Soundtracks, 15 Achievements to earn, 44 Hidden Collectible Omega Signs (here's your sign...again) a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter. I'm on the fence with recommending this game, for me it was no different than hundreds of other games. It's not really a bad game, but there's nothing offered that make me want to continue playing Haunted Train after the demo. Show less

Hello friends! Well, we have #3 in this series. As usual, I mostly review on the game play and not the story line, as others do a much better job of that than I. Graphics are fairly well done, except that occasionally the characters look as though they were superimposed onto the background. Colors have been cleaned up and are pretty clear and true. I say this because I beta tested this one way back in March, so they dug deep for this one, and it needed help. Looks like the devs paid some attention to suggestions. Even at that, the game play was very nice, no problems during the demo. Voices are well done and are age and character appropriate. I did not care for the "singing" story in the beginning, as the voice was a bit grating. Not a lot of music in this one, which is nice for a change. Very nice sound FX. Animation is well done, but not a lot of character interaction.
HOPs are quite simple and somewhat cluttered. Even at that, items are not difficult to find. We just had interactive silhouettes and lists. I don't see that you can switch to something else either. I did like that you don't constantly have a full inventory, as you use most items fairly quickly. This eliminates a lot of back-tracking. You do need to find pearls in each HOP. I noted in the Strategy Guide that most scenes show two pearls. This is misleading, as you visit each HOP twice, so you only find one pearl at a time. This one seems to have a lot more HOPs than normal as well. You have a jewel in this game that "sucks" the bad elements out and gives you occasional memories from the past. This was often confusing and sometimes included a puzzle, but didn't tell you anything. I ended up clicking around and accidentally figured it out. Very odd to me. Transport is helpful and it does transport to longer locations. Puzzles were interesting and a little different. I found that they took more time and thought than I expected, but were not difficult.
Collectibles are so simple to find. You need to find Omega symbols which are usually quite large and very easy to see. This was a little disappointing, as this game could have used a little more in this department.
I have the first two in this series and really liked them. Somehow, I don't feel this one is quite as good and definitely not challenging. Story is nothing new and moved a little slowly. This is not a bad game, but one I feel is geared more toward beginners, or someone who just wants a simple game. I sometimes do, and I have many in my collection. I just don't feel this one is CE worthy. I will put this one in my puddle and wait for the SE. I frequently get the SE when I feel a game is not CE worthy.
As always, try it for yourself. We all have different tastes in games and you may find this one to be exactly what you are looking for. Thanks for the reviews. Show less
