Our minds tend to block terrifying events as a coping mechanism, to help us survive. Our dreams however, don't always get the memo, and sometimes we're forced to relive horrifying events of the past, events we've tried so hard to forget. On this fateful night, Reynell's nightmares come to fruition, as his dreams open portals of his past from Sullivan River to Norwich Caves, back to where his troubles first began. A nightmare filled with Shadows of those who haunt his life. It is said that a man who cannot find his deepest memories, will wake up, but what happens if he does find his deepest memory?
I remember when Sullivan River was first released, and I bought the game without hesitation, and loved every minute of it. Since then, Sable Maze has had it's ups and downs, but I continue to enjoy this series, and Nightmare Shadows will definitely join my series collection. The characters are very realistic and have fluid movements (unlike the ones in Dark Romance that glide or walk with jilted movements) The graphics are decent, but tend to be a bit on the dark side. In this Collector's Edition version, there are Family Portraits to collect, and hidden Shadows to find. There are also Achievements to earn, some of which require playing HOP"s with the search penalty turned on.
The Hidden Object Scenes are the same ole, same ole, however, I did enjoy some of the locations. There are items to find that match riddles, Fragment finds, Interactive Progressive Silhouetted Shape finds and even smaller Zoom Zones HOP's with Multiples. One of the scene's were repeated in the demo, which is a feature I really don't like, because its boring a second time around, but hopefully not too many scenes are repeated in the main game. There is an alternate Match 3 game available if you're not into HOP's.
The Mini Games are fairly decent, so far nothing that's too difficult, and some are available with an Easy or Hard difficulty mode. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo:
1) Overlay a colored lens with the clear lens to scan for stepping stones, using the clues shown on each stone to choose the next colored lens.
2) Move figurines to their matching colored doors, moving a figurine will cause the others to move in the opposite direction.
3) Click rotational arrows and swap picture pieces along the lines to restore the 4 pictures.
4) Rotate circle sections until marbles align with all holes.
5) Find and replace torn book fragments correctly.
6) Use arrows to align two glass shards together.
7) Click on items to uncover fragments, if the selection is wrong, the items will shuffle.
8) Place tiles in their matching slots correctly.
9) Fold the map horizontally and vertically using visual clues on the map.
10) Use the map to find your way out of the maze.
11) Create a path for the ball to travel from left to right using directional arrows to move columns of tiles.
12) Arrange labels according to the timetable.
13) Defeat the shadow by selecting symbols in the scene that are shown in the top right corner.
14) Rotate the disks to swap the pieces to complete the picture.
15) Select and place the gears into the correct slots using the clues shown.

It was a long game for me, worth the wait and was lucky to get it on sale.
I am not a puzzle person but there were quite a few mini games I enjoyed. Especially the one to make the bears fall to the bottom.
The HOs were well crafted, interactive and FUN.

Sure was hoping to see a Match 3 game in extras but there was nothing in extras to play/replay. I enjoyed looking at the Developer's Diary and seeing the staff of Daily Magic looking all spooky. :)

SE portion took me: 3 hours 50min.
CE bonus play: 1 hour 15 min.
Total play: 5 hours 5 min.
The Walkthrough Guide is 44 pages and the CE bonus play is 8 pages of gameplay.
The chapters in this game are broken up into different places and times so the color scheme also changes from night to day, indoor to out. I love when a game changes the time of day to mix things up a bit. If I could I’d rate it higher than 5 stars.
The fear factor in this game is perfectly balanced. You are lulled by a beautiful garden scene with happily chirping birds and Bam! The shadow people are scary! They are perfectly done. This game kept making me jump in my chair!! This is what I loved most. It’s so scary when you are caught off guard. Most horror light games are in dreary locations or at night. When a game can still be scary during bright light, it is just ingenious! The amount of thought and detail that went into this game is obvious from beginning to end. I tried to play other games during this one so it wouldn’t end. I haven’t done that with a game since Paranormal Pursuit The Gifted One.
Even the 3D map is a work of art. This portal, task map is easy to read and transports you quickly.
When I got to chapter 5 “Forest Road” I was thinking to myself what a power house Daily Magic has become to BFG.
Most of the HOP were very detailed rooms and organized. There is a HOP in Chapter 5 called “The Toy store”. It leaves you to just stop and stare at all the detail and effort that went into this scene. I can’t believe it wasn’t in the demo. Whoever was responsible for this amazing scene, hats off!
Chapter 6 has an area called “The Old Church”. It is just so beautiful with sun rays streaming through the forest and fireflies bouncing around. I was happy to see this scene is a Wallpaper that is offered with the CE.
For the most part I don’t like the tinker type of MG. I prefer the game related kind that are interactive and I don’t get frustrated with. I did play most MG in this game which says a lot for me to finish that many.
The photos, notes and articles you see are the best I’ve seen in casual gaming. It is just another thing to show the amount of time and effort that went in to perfecting it.
I mostly liked the music in the HOPs. There was one track that sounded like the theme to Charlie’s Angels (though it is not one of the 4 tracks offered with the CE).
RE: BONUS PLAY: This bonus play is worth your buck in my opinion! I loved it. You play as a male this time, named Henry Olney (Sc. D. Neuroscience Society) He is investigating Mr. Reynal (dude you played as in the main game). Henry is trying to verify the theory of the Dreamlands. Technically, it’s the study of Lucid Dreaming. You continue collecting all the same items in bonus play.
You play in 8 NEW AREAS in the bonus play. ALL OF THE BONUS PLAY IS NEW!
Usually, I will list “old revised” areas in a completed game compared to “new” areas in bonus. It is a rare thing to see all new areas. I counted 20 mini games (I only skipped 2). I believe there are only 3 HOP scenes in the bonus to play which was a bummer, because I prefer HOP to MG.
Bonus play takes up 8 pages of the 44 page strat. guide.
The end cut scene to bonus play is-- WOW! I highly recommend the CE for the bonus play.
If you liked this game, try the demo’s to these as I feel they are similar in one way or another. I’ve also completed all the games I listed below, and highly recommend them too.
1. Fright CE (similar day time fright vibe)
2. Whispered Secrets: Everburning Candle CE (different
storylines, and times of day)
3. Phantasmat: Reign of Shadows (similar story)
4. Mysteries of the Mind: Coma (older game,
but my favorite story of any casual game ever played,
with the exception of the Reincarnation series)
5. Haunted Hotel: Personal Nightmare
(similar amazing jump scares)
Thank you BFG, and each of you at Daily Magic who obviously worked very hard on this amazing game. I am such a huge fan of yours! Show less

Nightmare Shadows goes under your skin. You may enter a maze, leading you to places of your childhood. But no sweat memories, on the contrary the fearful moments of your childhood e.g. at your grandparents’ home, at your school – all this will have to be lived through again. Only you can fight the nightmare with your good memories, you still have stowed somewhere in your subconscious.
Story (in short): You are Mr Reynolds and you haven’t slept well lately. So your doctor gave you some sleeping pills. Thankful for a hopefully good night ahead of you, you take two of them and fall asleep. Though it is no dreamless sleep or a nice dream, feeling wide awake you find yourself in strange surroundings. Standing on a cliff, you see your house melt away, in some distance a gate in a wall. There is no way back, so forward to the gate. It will lead you in a maze, which presents dark statues and gargoyles and you discover pieces of your childhood. There is your old bicycle, a teddy bear… Further in the maze a portal opens and you enter a first station of your childhood: your grandparents’ place. Later you will enter your old school and always you will have to face your fears of then again.
In parts scary and suspenseful, this is a psychological thriller. As in dreams, your surroundings are sometimes distorted, schoolmates appear as shadows, still distressing you. Going through these earlier steps of your life, you need to find the good memories. With these, you’ll be able to wake up again.
Gameplay is smooth, pace good and creative HOS let you find necessary items. Puzzles have an easy/hard option, a new feature! Very suitable and challenging is one of the first puzzles in the game: the maze leading to your grandparents’ home.
A suspenseful and challenging game, an instant buy for me.

This was just a fabulous game and I enjoyed the heck out of it. Creepy factor is very high which I enjoy and the story line is great. HOS are varied from lists to FROGS to progressive and there aren't a ton of them. Graphics are of high quality and the puzzles aren't pull-your-hair-out difficult but appropriate to the game. And a wonderful Bonus game to boot. Well done!!!

Do you have trouble sleeping because nightmares awaken you during the night? Well, you do since you play the game as Mr. Reynell, whose lack of sleep is affecting his job performance so much that he visited his doctor who gave him a prescription for sleeping pills. One would think that with two sleeping pills he would sleep dream free but that is not the case as he now will revisit scenes from his life rather than getting that peaceful sleep that he craves. As you play the game you will revisit scenes and times from Mr. Reynell’s life and find the answers to what is troubling him.
I love this game. I love the graphics and the way the game is put together. Even though the early scenes in the game are rather dark with a lot of gray and black the game is not all like that as we step into various scenes from our character’s life. Visit grandmother’s house and your school and beyond those early days as your life and dreams move forward.
Sable Maze has been a series that I loved when it was first released in 2012. Most of the games were excellent and this game continues in that trend, which is a bit unusual since many series seem to decline in storyline appeal after several years. There is a lot to love about the game including the excellent HOPS and puzzles.
The HOPS showed a lot of creativity early in the game but then it seemed to rely a lot on the storybook type of scene that I tend to dislike. I have been playing HOPA games for well over 10 years and even after all of that time the standard list type scenes remain my favorite. Because so many gamers demand more creativity in the games the developers have branched out but I still love the basics. Overall I do like the HOP scenes but wish those storybook scenes would go away.
The game has a ton of puzzles – maybe more than I have seen in a lot of games but again gamers keep clamoring for more puzzles and more difficult puzzles. So here we are with over 30 puzzles in this latest Sable Maze game but most of them are fairly easy. Some of the puzzles offer a choice between hard and easy when playing so it is up to you.
If you prefer the CE version of a game this one includes Shadow People to collect that will be used in the Shadow People Encyclopedia. You also collect 15 Family Pictures. Other extras include the standard fluff of Wallpapers, Concept Art, Music, and this one has a feature that I enjoy – the Developer Diary.
I found the game very enjoyable and think it is probably right towards the top of the series. Other games include Sullivan’s River, Norwich Caves, Forbidden Garden, Twelve Fears, Soul Catcher, and Sinister Knowledge. As always, I suggest that you try the demo to see if you will enjoy this game. Happy gaming! Show less

REVIEW BASED ON ENTIRE GAME (MINUS THE BONUS GAME)
Playing time for main game: 4 Hours
6 Chapters plus a Bonus Chapter – Strategy Guide: 44 Pages
OVERVIEW: Are you afraid of your own shadow – or, perhaps, the machinations and shadows of your mind? Enter the mind of the tormented Mr. Reynell, a victim of tragic circumstances within his life which are now trapping him in a nightmare – a dream world inhabited by shadow beings, led by the Shadow Man. You, as Mr. Reynell, will travel back in time and venture through a maze of painful memories. Along the way you will find yourself at your grandparents’ home, your high school, your college days, your graduation from college, all to piece together the events which happened in your life. Deep within the recesses of your nightmares looms a larger-than-life Shadow Man who is threatening you. Act quickly! These shadow beings are threatening to harvest your soul, taking your life force – forever. Always remember – “Buried Memories Never Die.” However, you must try to bury the past for your own sanity and the future with your beloved wife, Ash!
What a fantastic, well-crafted game! Daily Magic has upped their “game” and produced an excellent psychological thriller. This game has a well-written script worthy of a Hollywood movie. Kudos, dev! The graphics engage you in a mind maze and well depict a nightmare world with the depiction of the scarecrow-esque Shadow Man lurking behind the scenes. This game will appeal to those who love creepy, thought-provoking games. It is a fast-paced game chock full of activities. The HOP scenes and puzzles are thematic. The collectibles include creepy Shadow People for your Shadow People Encyclopedia and family portraits. They are easy to locate – the shadow people practically jump out at you! This was an automatic purchase for me. This is truly one of the best psychological thrillers of the year and quite a nice surprise from Daily Magic. Tears came to my eyes at the ending. It has a bittersweet ending and is well worth the price of this game.
HOP SCENES: There are 21 HOP scenes in the main game. I feel most of them are well-done. However, toward the end of the main part of the game, there were quite a few storybook scenes in which you locate items listed in BOLD letters. There are five of those in succession at the end. I did feel that at the final juncture of this game, this developer threw in these storybook scenes as filler. There are several FROG scenes, which are seldom seen in most games nowadays. These scenes provide an inventory item to be used within the game. There are lists of items and silhouette scenes which are creatively designed and very interactive. Most of the scenes require you to locate items and interact with them in the scenes. The items are easy to locate. You also have the option to play a Match-3 game in lieu of the scenes.
PUZZLES: This game is puzzle intense. THERE ARE 35 PUZZLES IN THIS GAME! That is a lot of puzzles. They do vary in difficulty and design. There is a multiple step one at the end of the game. The game begins with many puzzles which have the option for “hard” and “easy” versions of the puzzles. However, after the demo, they were few and far between. There are only two of this type of puzzle after the demo. This was disappointing to me. I had hoped there would be more. Most of the standard puzzles are easy.
You will restore many pictures through rotating rings, moving tiles, and switch puzzles. There are matching puzzles, sequence puzzles, Simon Says puzzles, and connection puzzles in which you cannot retrace your steps. Unlike the HOP scenes, I felt the puzzles were better at the end. Here are a few of my favorites:
(1) A-MAZE-ING! This origami/maze puzzle requires the player to fold paper along horizontal and vertical lines so that a path is created to go through a maze. To me, this requires some strategic thinking to assess where to fold the lines.
(2) DEFIES LOGIC! I love logic problems so this puzzle was one I wished to play. This is another style of puzzle not seen in many HOP games. It requires the player to place high school classes into a grid according to clues provided on a scrap of paper.
(3) I AM IN A-MAZE-MENT. This puzzle is probably my favorite of the whole game. In this maze puzzle you begin with a circle with a surrounding ring containing red tokens. Within the ring are blue tokens which match up with these red ones and various twisting paths leading to the red tokens. You must move the red tokens to the proper path so that, when clicked, each blue token finds its way down this path to match up with the red token.
(4) TANTALIZING TANGRAM: There is one in this game and it is at the end. It is a nice puzzle to finish the game. In this case you must arrange odd-sized pieces into a square so no spaces remain.
(5) GRADUATING A PHOTO: In this little toughie, you must not only switch tiles to restore a picture, but rotate them as well. Get prepared for a roller-coaster ride of up, down and switching locations within this puzzle!
WORST PUZZLES: PHYSICALLY EXASPERATING: I generally don’t like physical puzzles and I do feel the physical puzzles in this game are poorly created. In one, you must keep a token in the green area of a bar while duking it out with an evildoer. However, the arrows which are supposed to help keep that ball in the green area do not work very well – either that or I am a klutz! Probably both are true. I gave up after a few tries!
BONUS GAME: Enter the world of sleep research with neuroscientist, crazed Dr. Olney. That creepy guy is not getting into my dreams! From what I have played, it appears this is not related to, but a good addition to the game.

Sable Maze did not disappoint!! I have all their previous games and did not hesitate to purchase this one, too. Loved the different ways HOS were presented and the puzzles were often challenging. The storyline was good and easy to follow. I will definitely play this game again and hope Sable Maze developers will keep them coming with this quality.
I recommend this game!
