Emma Roberts the famous journalist from the Fear For Sale magazine, is on another paranormal investigation in Alaska. The small town of Whitefall is experiencing some large issues, of ghostly proportions. Some say these are the spirits of the victims who were burned to death when Whitefall was completely turned to ash in 1912! The spirits became restless when a Spa and Hotel was recently commissioned, and Emma soon finds herself stuck in the past. Has the curse of Whitefall snared Emma in a trap from the past, or has the past caught up to it's future?
WHAT HAPPENED to this series staple features??? There aren't any points to earn for collecting items or achievements. There aren't any collectibles in several categories, there aren't any jigsaw puzzle pieces to find, and you don't get to work your way up the journalistic ladder from Cub reporter to a pulitzer prize winning Emma Robert status! I never thought much about these features to be honest, but now that they're gone, I'm really disappointed! Elefun games includes these staple features in all their games, Witches Legacy, Mayan Prophecies, The Keeper of Antiques, and until now, Fear For Sale. Now that they are gone, I say bring them back, otherwise these games are no different than all the other games out there. They added a new feature that made me gasp with horror, a Tribal Amulet to help Emma overcome mystical objects. Let's not talk about this feature...ever!
What this Collector's Edition version does offer, isn't all that exciting, I love the storyline because it's different, but I will add that because I'm not impressed with the CE bling, I'll probably wait for the SE version to buy this game, unless I take advantage of a good sale. Besides the normal CE features of 12 Achievements to earn, wallpapers and concept art pictures, there are 33 Morphing Objects, one in each scene, (At least they still offer Morphs) and the collectibles are just a stupid Eye sketch. If you go into the journal, you can click the eye symbols to fill in puzzle squares and read a paragraph about the story with each eye you find. This feature does not impress me in the least bit, and it's kind of hard not to spot an out of place eye sketch with huge eyelashes. The cursor also changes whenever you scan across an item that morphs, a feature I wish was an option that can be disabled. You can still interact with a few items in each scene but not as many items as usual for this dev.
The Hidden Object Scenes are varied with Interactive List finds, Multiple Item finds, and Keywords in a Story. There are also the usual Zoom Zone HOP's where you find a handful of objects that are spread throughout the scene on the outside of the Zoom Zoned area. Some HOP's have an optional Jigsaw Puzzle to assemble, but the one jigsaw puzzle I assembled, had very dark pieces on a dark background that made it difficult to see the puzzle pieces and where they were supposed to go.
The Mini Games are decent, but fairly easy to solve. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo:
1) Use the clues shown to enter the correct code, each of the 5 clues tells you where the puzzle piece doesn't go such as this isn't first, or this tile doesn't go before this one.
2) Move figurines along the track to their corresponding articles.
3) Use the Tribal Amulet to find 7 hidden symbols.
4) Find and select the landmark clues to find the correct paths through the forest.
5) Swap photos and notes to the correct labeled category.
6) Follow the recipe directions.

If I had to sum up this entire game, it would be “A haunting crime who-done-it, interesting story, and not at all scary”. I thought the graphics were clearer than some of Elefun’s other games and adjusted nicely to a larger monitor.
The SE portion of the game took me 3 hours 28 min.
The CE bonus took me 1 hour 30 min.
Total gameplay- 2 min short of 5hrs
MUSIC: Typical to Elefun games, the music is great in this title too. My favorite song in this game was the track called “Sacred Sanctuary” and it reminded me of ancient Egypt. I’m a Reiki healer, in real life, and I use some of these beautiful clips in the background during a session to assist with the relaxation level you need. The end title credits song was one of the most innovative I’ve seen in casual gaming…. It incorporated the story, so be sure to watch/listen to the credits!!! Spythere, didn't you just love the music in this one too?
HOPs & MG: There are just too many of these to list that I really liked. Chapter 4 is probably my favorite chapter in this game. There is a HOP in chapter 4 where you hand items back into the scene to a miner. It felt like a lot of time & effort went into this one. Matching pictured items from inventory to place back into the HOP is one of my favorite types of HOPs, especially the way it was done here. Chapter 4 has another HOP at the lake, where you move items within the scene to match silhouettes. At one point you even toss a rock into the water to make a fish pop out. How innovative is that?? The best MG in the game for me was at the VERY end of the main game. When you see a computer make sure to click on everything to get the most out of this. Much of the story is tied up here and it’s important to read it.
RE BONUS & BONUS PLAY: It starts out where I was thinking, “I’m confused, and is that even possible?” Oh well- I’m in the land of casual gaming + it’s all ok in this altered state of reality. Those of you that like when you play as a MALE CHARACTER instead of female lead…. you get to here. I'm a female myself and like playing as both. In one bonus location you are Emma again, but travel through to an earlier time and play as a male called Archibald Norman Brady. In area 7 of bonus (the gold mines) a HOP has A++ narration with the cool drum music in the background, the whole thing was good!
The MAJORITY of the bonus play is NEW PLAY. It is worth your while. And even some of the revised scenes were altered so much I had to check the WTG to see if they were new areas.
********* Potential spoiler- next I describe one area in bonus, what happens if you miss the collectible eyes, & I describe what the 3 screensavers do, so FWD to "end spoiler"*********
There is one new area called “Mount River” with river rapids that look so real I wanted to picnic on the rocks of the cold water! Well, until I saw the reflection in the puddle (with the chest) be sure to note this detail because it’s details like that, that just really make a game go from good to great. The water looks so real. Personally, I thought this area of bonus play was the best one in the entire game—demo included. The Lakeshore in main game is just as pretty.
RE: THE COLLECTIBLE EYES:
This game has a game summary journal via your collectible eyes. I wonder if you get it in the SE, because I feel it really was needed to understand who’s who, & where. If only, they’d give us a summary journal like this outright & standard to both SE & CE of the game) that just explains the chapter again quickly. This journal was so handy but I kept missing the collectible eyes. If you miss them here, you miss out on additions to the story summary. This storyline was really thought out—and, I thought, rather involved but the summary was definitely needed here.
~~~Beware!!~~~ When you open a note collect the eye icon FIRST! Because, by accident, I opened 4 notes/articles and closed them by mistake and the small window shut down, the note becomes inaccessible after you close it. I didn’t even catch on there were eye icons you had to actually CLICK ON to get the story summary text to appear. I was 4 eyes short at the end so I missed 1 entire page of notes of game story and 1 entire jigsaw puzzle of the 5 you assemble.
I wished the text boxes would have stayed up a bit longer and re-appear if an item was clicked on again. It would only stay up for a second and wouldn’t reappear if you click the note or item again but they did stay up when characters were speaking.
SCREENSAVERS- What they do when running.
1. It’s the first scene in the main game. Snow falls, crows flap, and the store owner comes out.
2. Is the area from the main game that has the wooden sign posts Whitefall/Forest. There are falling leaves and the black crows appear & disappear in a puff of black smoke.
3. Is a scene called “Grotto”, a beautiful new scene found only in bonus play. You are in a cave with colorful crystals that twinkle on and off. The water in the cave ripples too.
*********end potential spoilers*********
This game is one of the few that actually changes the TIME OF DAY! I’m just stoked when a game changes up the time of day in a scene and/or the basic color scheme of the game. I’ve noticed if I’ve played in the same color scheme & areas that look too much alike, it becomes a little monotonous. So in a good way, it really is a game changer for me. ha-ha
If you liked these games maybe demo these. They have a similar feel.
1. Lake House: Children of Silence (2012 game though)
2. Phantasmat Reign of Shadows (Especially at the beginning)
3. Enigmatis 3- Shadow of Karkhala
All in all, I really liked this game and the 3 screensavers they give you right up front, the bonus play and DL music tracks made buying this CE version worth it for me.
Thank you BFG--You are the best, Elefun! You keep making them with screensavers & I’ll keep buying them :)
Once again play the role of Emma Roberts( Paranormal Journalist) as Editor Anthony Williams asks you to investigate a cursed Hotel/Spa construction site of the Alaskan mountains in the town of Whitewall. Construction of the resort began the first week of October when weird things started happening and by November workers on the site saw a Ghost girl and refused to continue the project. At the construction site you pick up your suitcase which contains a copy of Fear For Sale magazine "Hidden in the Darkness" a cursed watch and a journal that belongs to a man named Norman Grady. Norman was a gold miner for the mining town of Whitefall. While looking for gold in Whitefall he fell in love with a girl named Olivia Rice and subsequently proposed to her as you learn from reading his journal he wrote in 1912. Your adventure continues once you board the Alaskan cableway car which takes you back in time to 1912 when the small town of Whitefall burned completely to the ground. When exiting the cableway you meet Norman, who has fallen into an opening in the earth beneath the mine shafts. You rush to attempt to save Norman but that leads you to the jail of Whitefall where the deputy sheriff tells you there has been a murder recently and the town is closed. He directs you to see Sheriff Dan Rice who is Olivia Rice's father. Dan Rice never approved of Norman and daughter Olivia getting married, he doesn't give consent so Olivia refuses Norman's proposal. In fact Dan suspect's Norman of the recent murder and entices the township to a jury trial. A quick stop at the dressmaker gives you an opportunity to change your modern day clothing into bounty hunter attire which is suitable for 1912. This way you can enter the town unnoticed to learn more about Norman's trial. The township convicts Norman of Olivia's death, but you are convinced he's innocent. You proceed to break Norman out of jail by setting off a GREEN GAS EXPLOSION to distract Sheriff Rice and the township but in doing so you create a fire that you quickly find a way to extinguish. When the fire dies away the Deputy Sheriff enters the jail, announces that Olivia Rice's body has been found and he arrests YOU for her murder and locks you in jail. After freeing yourself at the jail you find yet another journal, this one belongs to Joanna Chaney. Her husband Tobias is a close friend of Sheriff Dan Rice. Seems that Joanna kidnapped Olivia when she was a baby but she didn't murder her and neither did Tobias. Find the secret passage way Joanna speaks of in HER diary and escape the jail. Hurry Emma because you can't leave Whitefall until the curse is lifted. The deceased people of Whitfall live the same day over & over again. In the morning no one remembers what occurred the day before except you, because you never died. You must stay ALIVE Emma and figure out this conundrum!!!
Issue eleven takes about four (4) hours to complete and another 50 minutes with the bonus chapter. Elefun games did an amazing job with the storyline but the CE bling isn't worth mentioning. This game is not as ‘fearful’ as the title promises; still, the story alone is fantastic enough to make us look pass that fact. The graphics are on the same level from what we expected from a leading HOPA development team. The colors are vibrant and the details are vivid, the locations ominously portrayed the era and the animations are acceptably smooth. Moreover, the soundtracks are great, they really add some suspense to the game. I've been a fan of this series since it was conceived in 2010. This one was a definite purchase for me. Cheers!
Slip into Emma Robert’s shoes again and start off to your 11th investigation for Fear for Sale magazine. It will bring you to Alaska, to the construction site of a new hotel, where ghost sightings have brought the project at risk. At the cablecar the station master is not encouraging. Stating, he had always warned, to build at a cursed place, he leaves but you may look for usable items make it to the construction site. In the company office near the station, you find more information: a short videoclip, made by construction workers, shows something ‘ghostly’. Workers also found an old diary, written by a man named Norm, with a comment by his girlfriend Olivia, dated from 1912, the year, when the old mining town Whitefall burnt to ashes. Another report shades light on the paranormal activities: it began with lights in the mountains, then tools disappeared, people heard strange whispers, in the end some claimed to have seen ghosts. With rumors, the place were cursed, the project is now in danger of not being realized. The cablecar fails on the way to the construction site, so you have to swing down into the forest with a rope made of old clothes. First thing you find: a man in a pit, covered by branches. He needs help, water. You are in the middle of the woods, a path, with an old cart withering beneath, leads further into the forest and small lake. There a ghostly woman forms out of the mist and warns you ‘to stop it, or all will die’. With some water from the lake, the man in the pit recovers, asks for your name and introduces himself - Norm. On his way to his girlfriend Olivia, somebody had pushed him into this pit. Norm, Olivia – the diary, which told the story of the two lovers. With Norm’s help, you can note some landmarks and find your way to the near town: Whitefall. And Whitefall looks old but not burnt down to ashes. So you have landed in the past! You jumped just into the time period, in which Norm and Olivia lived in Whitefall.
Seems, you are about to find out the origin of the paranormal activities of your time in Whitefall! You will wander through the town, talk to the inhabitants and find out more about the past events and their impact.
When you find the diary with Norm’s and Olivia’s lovestory, you as well are equipped with an amulet, to ban ghosts. It works as the now well known device, found in many games: solve a mini game, then the ghost appears and speaks to you. The mini game can be skipped.
Puzzles and mini games are quite easy but entertaining. They are well implanted in the gameplay, you achieve goals by solving them. HOS are variable, not too many in the demo.
I am now playing this game and find it to be different than alot of the games out there. Instead of the usual backgrounds of most finding lost relatives, this has brought it to modern day and age, which puts a twist that that element. Presentation of the story, graphics and voice-overs are well done. I recommend this game just to see something on the different side.
I recommend this game!
I just finished this game and the bonus round and was totally satisfied. I have this whole series and I'm a big fan of Emma. I won't go into a lot of game details as others already have. I was pleased that the storyline made sense and kept my interest up. Also the bonus chapter was relevant to the main story. Music was good, not overpowering, and fit the mood at whatever point you were at in the story. Finally I will say that if you like this series you will not be disappointed in this one.
I recommend this game!
