I almost liked every puzzle. I Loved the drone, photo squares, maze, boat.
The Bonus Chapter has Billy returning to do something for the girls. It's about the boy scouts. Fun little bonus.
Extras are 7 case files that you put together a small jigsaw and has info. Treasure Hunter find 32 items in the scenes. Collect 29 Mad Head signature symbol. Find 17 Morphs in the Hops. 13 Wallpapers, 18 Concept Art, 7 Soundtracks. Achievements. Replay 17 Hops. No puzzle replay.
I had no problems or delays with this game. It played smooth, I mostly knew what to do. No Blood. Not gross. Liked the collectible indicator, if you hover over the button it would say it's found, if it was. Great Game. Show less

You and a friend are exploring the now vacant but once acclaimed Kilbourn Observatory. Ryan and Anne Kilbourn worked there for years until there was a terrible accident that tragically took the life of Anne. Not long after the accident Ryan went missing and it is as if he vanished from the face of the earth. Ryan and Anne were said to have created a device that would open a door to another universe but maybe that is not such a good thing. Enveloped in grief over Anne’s death Ryan began refining the device with hope that he would even be able to reunite with Anne one day.
With Fright Chasers Dark Exposure being a game from a very talented developer it of course includes wonderful graphics as well as an excellent sound package that includes believable voiceovers that relay all of the emotion that the characters “feel” in the game.
Your tools include a transporter type map and, hold your breath – wait for it . . . yes, you guessed it a gimmick. This time we have a camera that when fitted with a special lens will allow us to see the spirit world. The camera isn’t that annoying as far as gimmicks go and it does serve a purpose in the game. There is also another tool that can qualify as a gimmick since you will use it for protection but there is a puzzle associated with its use.
I enjoyed the HOPS in this game more than in recent games and found many of them to be very creative and well-designed so that they fit well into the storyline. Even more than the HOPS, I absolutely loved the puzzles. Some of the puzzles were different and I think one of my favorites was the safe puzzle where we must recreate the pattern from some photos in order to open the safe. It is a bit tricky and lots of fun to figure out the right combination. The puzzles are also a bit more difficult than usual at times so I wish they could be replayed in the CE extras but that ability doesn’t seem to be built into the game.
CE Content includes Collectibles include the same old boring Mad Head Signature Swirl to find, There are Morphing Objects to be found in the usual places as well.. Of course there are Achievements to earn as well. Wallpapers, Concept Art, Soundtracks, replay of 21 HOP Scenes, Case Files to assemble, a Bonus Chapter, and a 46-page Strategy Guide.
I found this game to be very good with some great gameplay moments. Coupled with excellent puzzles and creative HOPS I think this is probably one of the best games to be released in recent weeks. That being said the game theme became much different than I originally hoped it would be. Unfortunately, we have another evil that is taking control and I am really over that theme. It looks like Fright Chasers is going to continue as a series but I hope that the developer might find some different content for future game themes. All in all, even though I am not fond of where the game went, it was done quite well and had moments that provided a lot of entertainment and a need to think along the way. Even though I really enjoyed this game, please try the demo to see if it is one you will enjoy as well. Happy Gaming! Show less

REVIEW BASED ON THE ENTIRE GAME – Time: 5 Hours Minus the Bonus Chapter
5 Chapters Plus a Bonus Chapter – Strategy Guide: 43 Pages
OVERVIEW: Sci-Fi fans! Enjoy a “stellar” game by Mad Head! What a great game, and to me, one of their best! The fright chasers are back taking you to a whole new world of adventure! Get ready to enter the world of quantum mechanics and traverse through the time and space. However – be warned - once you open that portal, you have no idea what will be lurking on the other side. You and your friend Lisa are off to the Kilbourn Observatory in Fell Oaks to investigate a mysterious story concerning a famous astronomer, Ryan, and his wife, Anne. This happy scientific duo had so much in common and were both working on a project to open the door to an alternate universe. However, tragically, Anne died in a motorcycle accident and then Ryan disappeared. However, once you enter the observatory, you discover that missing Ryan has kidnapped Lisa – but why? Expect some surprises which may seem alien to you! You must battle whatever forces are in that house to free your friend.
This game will appeal to sci-fi fans out there. It is a LONG game so get your refreshments in line as you go into battle mode to fight to get your friend back. I have been waiting for this game to appear. I don’t believe the demo truly reflects the excellence of this game. The game is much better after the demo. The graphics are incredible and do give a modern (drones) and sci-fi flavor to the game. The pace is excellent with an interesting story and plenty of activities. The puzzles are varied and there are some very easy ones intermingled with a couple difficult ones to smack down even the ‘brainiacs’ out there! With an unexpected revelation at the end of the demo, the story changes drastically. You collect swirls, treasures and morphing objects. You can replay the HOP scenes from the games but NOT puzzles. At the end you get a blog with jigsaw puzzles as a device to give more information on the characters.
WHY NOT A REPLAY OF PUZZLES? I have few complaints about this game; however, I wish I could replay some of the puzzles within this game. They were difficult for me and I would like another chance at them. I have addressed this with Mad Head and hope in future games they will make this option available.
LOCATE HIDDEN ITEMS WITH A GIMMICKY SPIRIT CAMERA. What would a HOP game be today without some special device to locate hidden items? They are in almost all games now. Get into the “spirit” of the game with your very own “spirit camera.” This camera is used throughout the game to locate those special white energy orbs. This is my only other complaint about this game. This game stands on its own merits. There is NO need for any gimmicks to sell this game.
HOP SCENES: There are seventeen (17) scenes in the main game. The HOP scenes include the usual lists of items and silhouette scenes. Some are creatively designed. Mad Head does provide some unusual backgrounds for their scenes including a clock face, a wine cellar, and a rock. There is a creative scene in which you replace items back into the scene as well as search for silhouette items as well. Of course, what would any current game would not include some runes? There are a couple of scenes in which you locate runes.
PUZZLES: There are twenty-seven (27) puzzles in the main game. They are varied in style and difficulty with some difficult ones. In my opinion, a sci-fi game should have a few puzzles which are challenging. They are like ones we have seen in the past. Included are switch puzzles, many - many lock puzzles (too many for my taste), moving tiles puzzles to restore pictures, matching, and sequence puzzles. However, they do reflect the theme of the game: Here are a few of my favorites:
A. Fly a drone. Yeah! Maneuver settings to fly a drone to its location behind a rock. Not hard but so much fun. You also fly it to retrieve a key as well.
B. Connect-the-dots. Constellation puzzle. Connect dots on a star map to match given constellations. Use arrows to locate the proper star alignment before connecting those dots
C. Diversity in gaming! Logic problem. Move 4 each of 4 different types of tokens so that there are no more than one of each for each row and column. Rating: 2
D. Truly a-maze-d. Maze puzzles. Move a blue marble from one end to the other end of the maze in three different geometric shapes.
E. Runes, runes, and more runes! Assembly puzzle. Using an amulet choose two runes which, when combined, create a symbol in the center of the screen. (Use this each time you must use the amulet to fight the evildoers)
F. Row, row, row your boat! Navigation maze puzzle. Navigate your boat through the water while avoiding police boats (and so loud when they catch you) and other obstacles in your path.
G. Truly a BIG FISH puzzle. Checkers puzzle. Using adorable blue and gold Big Fish, reverse their positions on a grid by having them jump over each other until all those fish are reversed.
H. Turn the lights off! On a grid with 9 buttons, push them until they all are turned off. Pushing one affects the others.
I. Monkey shines! Ye old Evolution of Man puzzle. Switch tiles so that the natural state of evolution is shown.
J. Get your degree in wine physics! Valve puzzle. Move wine from bottles through tubes in a Mad Head designed contraption in exact amounts by using valves to regulate the flow of the liquid.
LEVELS: Intern, Field Reporter, Star Columnist, Editor-in-Chief, Freelancer

This is the part where I sing praises about Mad Head games, usually. I felt a bit let down by this new series intro, because it's anything but Frightening! Mad Head may want to go back to the drawing board, they're beginning to get stuck in a rut. Same graphics, they stand room for improvement because at times they are blurry and cartoonish in nature, it's hard to feel scared when they remind me of a Saturday morning cartoon! Same symbols, there's symbols all over the place, including the same CE Spiral Collectibles, not to mention the fact that you would expect to see astrological symbols in this game, but they still chose to rehash their "Beyond" symbols. And now for the really disappointing news....they chose to add a Spirit Camera to reveal supernatural elements, a.k.a balls of white light. gasp, sigh, gasp. I was on the fence with how I really felt about this game. Initially I was only going to give this game 3 stars, however, I did love that this game takes place in current time. I have a cell phone for reference, and a drone as my helper. Also I liked that I didn't have a broken purse zipper!
Fright Chasers have set up camp near the Kilbourn Observatory, home to Ryan and Anne Kilbourn. Rumor has it, Anne still roams the hallways of the observatory as her grieving husband works diligently to find a way to defy the laws of physics, to join her. Before you can find a way inside (it's complicated) your partner Lisa becomes a victim of something supernatural, or at least astrophysical. One thing's for sure, ghosts really do exist, and Lisa will have plenty of things to blog about, if she makes it out alive!
This Collector's Edition version has everything you'd expect from Mad Head, because they offer the same exact bling in the same exact fashion with all of their games. Remember Rite of Passage Heart of the Storm? Remember Shadowplay, Maze Subject 360, and Beyond? These games came roaring in like a lion with fresh storylines, and sharp detailed graphics like no other dev had presented before. I fear they have fallen into the epix trap, where they are pressured to create a new game each month, sometimes multiple games a month. I've got all the time in the world, to wait patiently for that next "cutting edge" game. I'll gladly board the Mad Head train again, but first it needs to head back to the station for repairs.
The Hidden Object Scenes actually do a decent job of trying to keep them relevant. The very first one is extremely interactive with multiple finds, followed by a small Zoom Zone HOP, and a Matching Pairs scene. In this CE version, as well as all of their other CE's, each scene has a Morphing Object to find for added challenge. If only they were offered in the main game....if only.
The Mini Games are in abundance, some are fun, but they all seem to be of the same nature. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo:
1) Click on the triangles in the correct order, by trial and error.
2) Drag to rotate rings to complete the picture.
3) Use phone controls to guide the drone. (the drone is used for several applications, and not discarded in the entire demo!)
4) Use up and down arrows to enter the correct padlock combination.
5) Swap plates so the projected image matches the symbol shown.
6) Fill the board with colored lights so that it matches the number of colored light in each column and row.
7) Connect the circles on the top and bottom of the grid by passing through all dots shown on the clue without overlapping.
8) Same drone game, different application.
9) Recreate the pattern from the photo on the grid, passing over a tile multiple times will change it's color.
10) Connect the dots on the globe so they match the image on the paper using directional arrows.
This Collector's Edition has Wallpapers, Concept Art pictures, 7 Music Soundtracks, 10 Achievements to earn, 17 replayable Hidden Object Scenes, Case Files, 17 HOP Morphing Objects, 29 Collectible Spirals that unlock bonus content, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter, enjoy! Show less

Hello friends! As usual, I review mostly on the game play and leave the story line to those who do a much better job than I. Other than a little blur in the close up scenes, which seem to be a norm these days, the graphics are very nice and clear. Colors seemed to have a little blue, but not over powering and not all the time. Otherwise, colors were true and bright. Game play was excellent, with no glitches or problems during the demo. Animation was excellent and realistic, with eye and mouth movement, and they are very smooth. Voices were age and character appropriate, with emotion that worked quite well together with the facial movements. Music was okay. I turn it down low so I can hear the sound FX. These are done very well. There did not seem to be any "dead air" during the demo.
HOPs are varied a bit, but mostly interactive lists. The scenes are very clean and items were not difficult to find. We do have a morphing object to find, which is not as easy as you think. Nope, no match 3 or jigsaw puzzles to switch to either. Puzzles didn't seem difficult to me and there wasn't anything new. I did find one that took me a bit to complete. There are not a lot of HOPs or puzzles in this one, at least not during the demo, hopefully it picks up a bit as we go along. Hint system is helpful, but it does not transport to longer locations. This would be nice, as you do a lot of back tracking. Yes, we have a jump map, but it is very bland and boring and detracts from the rest of the game. It needed some color and no pop outs!
Collectibles were nice, even though we had the standard symbol that this Dev uses in all their games. It is large and easy to find. When looking around at the extras, I found that we also have case file puzzles pieces to put together. No sure where those came from, but I completed 3 puzzles after the demo. These puzzles tell you a little about the picture you just put together. A little disappointing.
I found this to be an interesting story, even though we still had ghosts to deal with. Yes, we had a supernatural camera lens to hunt down "light balls" in order to talk to the ghost...not my favorite feature. The game started off well, but seemed to slow down a little, then pick up at the end of the demo, naturally. Still, it was not hard to follow and you are constantly on the move. It was not all that challenging, but what game is these days. That said, I like this game well enough to give it a 4.25 on my demo scale, and will purchase it for my collection. I think most all levels of players will find this one enjoyable for one reason or another.
As always, try it for yourself and see what you think. We all have different tastes in games and you may not care for this one at all. Thanks for the reviews. Show less

Mad Head games are usually among my favorites. I don't know what has happened lately that the games they are putting out now are less than spectacular. I haven't been wowed by a Mad Head game in awhile. This one is no different. We have another evil entity possessing the body of a human and trying to destroy the world as we know it. The dialogue bordered on ridiculous sometimes in the "I'm gonna get you! Now you die!" way. Of course, no one ever dies and you always win the requisite battle at the end because its so easy. Furthermore, while I'm doing all the running around in the game and pilfering items for my own benefit, I always wonder why the bad guy doesn't show up more often. And then there's the camera. Its supposed to allow you to track the ghost or whatever it is but really IMHO was somewhat unnecessary.
I thought the bonus game was stupid, had nothing to do with the main game and was so easy as to be boring.
In spite of all the fails in this game, there are some good parts, or should I say better parts so I can't completely nix the whole thing. The HOs were interactive and contained morphing objects. The mini games were not brain drainers and I liked that. Although the dialogue may have been weird, the delivery was good. I don't listen to music so I can't comment on that. I did like the collectibles but they were very easy to find.
I'm hoping the next game by this dev will be better because they have a good track record. Try the demo however, you may think it a 5 star game also but I'm not sure it rates that high. Show less

This is OK... but I wonder if our feedback ever gets to the devs or if they read them?? Many of us, the clients after all, have said that we do not like demons and are getting very tired of runes... PLEASE listen to us.
MadHead always has great voiceovers and great music. Also the HOPS are good too.
Otherwise the demons have to go....

I read the BFG blurb, I played the demo, I read the reviews, and I must be missing something about this game.

I saw quite a few "Duh" moments in the demo that left me less than impressed. I also wasn't excited about the camera that you used to find energy balls to "see" the ghost of Anne Kilbourn.
Some things were just silly: There is a brightly lighted doorway in the upstairs hall. You enter through it into a very dark room.
You put a cog in a door lock and ten feet of hallway rotates, including the heavy grandfather clock next to that door. You then spend more time getting another cog to watch it rotate back. If you put the cog in the door lock, do you then jump back to avoid the tumbling clock?
When you shoot at Lisa to free her from her shackles, shouldn't she at least lean away from the target?
I just don't know what to tell you. The game I saw in this demo was not one I'd care to purchase due to the logic lapses and story.
Please try the demo for yourself.
