What's to love: Gorgeous settings. A coherent story with a lot of interactions with marvelous and various characters. Feels like an old fashioned ghost story rather than a horror movie. Love the skipping stones alternative. Surprise ending. Characters who aren't from northern Europe. Probably the best bonus chapter I've ever played. Worth buying the CE. Thanks devs, keep 'em coming. I'd love to see more like this.

With this myth we may take part in a Mexican tradition: the Day of the Dead. This holiday focuses on family and friend gatherings for remembering all, who have died and celebrate the victory of life over death.
We play as Elena’s brother, who after some time abroad, meets with her again. Together we will celebrate the Calavera, the day of the dead on the island of Alma. After several preparations and a stormy takeover to the island, we finally reach the festival. But the unruly ride on the boat has shaken us, we have a feeling, something is not quite right at the party. Then it happens: dark figures appear – the shadow fishermen. According to legend, they are the souls of drowned fishermen, who can’t rest and come back to threaten the living.
So the day of the dead gains a macabre meaning: the dead are actually among us. We need to help Elena, who was hurt and fled to the graveyard. Soon, we get assistance of the island’s shaman. But it will not be easy to overcome the dangerous shadow fishermen.
This is a great production: atmosphere is very suiting, you get the feeling of being at the calavera festival yourself, then, when the shadows enter, the festival ends in chaos. The story or better legend of the shadow fishermen, is partly told in storybooks or via dialogues. HOS are variable and some quite creative, puzzles not very difficult in the demo – may change later in the game.

Some of the reviews did not do this game justice. The colors and the blend of Aztec and Spanish Culture are wonderful. Having spent lots of time in Mexico, I can attest to the authenticity of much in this game. JUST WONDERFUL!

However, I found myself without any game to play having gone through all the other HOG/Adventure game available; so, I bit the bullet and bought it. I am so glad I did. I thoroughly enjoyed this game, in fact, it is among my favorites. The graphics are gorgeous the mini-games are mostly original and challenging, and there's no cute little talking animal to help along the way. So what if it's not historically accurate? It's INSPIRED by the Mexican culture, This is not a sociology class, it's a game. None of games in this series, or any series for that matter, are intended to be educational, except perhaps the Smithson ones. Just enjoy the play. Show less

It is unusual for me to post a review several days after a game has been released but real life got in the way of playing the game earlier. My review is based on the entire game and it looks as if I am in the minority here because I absolutely loved Myths of the World Behind the Veil.
With the recent trend of games being so drab, Behind the Veil grabbed my attention because the graphics are beautiful and the scenes are full of vibrant color. Not only is the game colorful and a visual treat it is complemented by a wonderful sound track and excellent voice acting.

There have already been so many reviews posted that I don’t need to go into all of the details in my review but will only say that I enjoyed the gameplay and particularly the mini-games. The mini-game that we must play when we use the special tool is one of my favorite puzzles in the game. I have always loved untangle the ropes puzzles so I found this one a lot of fun. Some of the other puzzles were a bit difficult to figure out because the instructions were not very helpful, which is one of the major problems with most games from this developer. IMHO, the developer should put a bit more thought and detail into their instructions so at least we know how to proceed.
Having played the entire game I can say that I loved the storyline (one that actually made sense and didn’t’ seem to fall apart toward the end of the game), the gameplay was enjoyable and sometimes a bit tricky. After what seems like months of dreary, dusty, colorless games it is such a treat to have a game that is vibrant. I hope the trend will continue because I am quite sick of the drab, evil-themed games. For me, Behind the Veil is one of the best games in the Myths of the World series, with my other favorites being The Heart of Desolation, and of Fiends and Fairies. Kudos to EIPIX for taking us to a new part of the world in Behind the Veil and for bringing a beautiful part of Mexican culture to life – your team did an awesome job with this game. Show less

I wish the main character's story was a bit stronger and the puzzles weren't so time-consuming, and it felt like the game went on a bit too long.
But really, incredibly immersive and I also recommend the CE for the bonus game.

Hello friends! As always, I review on the game play and seldom on the story line, as others do a much better job of that than I. Graphics are very nice, very clear, but I did notice a "wave" over the face of our heroine in close ups. As always, there is some blurring in the close ups as well, which seems to be the norm lately with all the games. Colors are beautiful, bright and true. Game play was excellent, with no problems during the demo, and the scenes fit my large screen quite nicely. Voices are very well done, and are age and character appropriate. They even show emotion and not just someone reading a script. Music was soothing and not intrusive. Sound FX were nice and fit whatever scene or area you were in at the time. Animation is smooth and quite realistic.
HOPs are varied, the scenes are fairly clear and items are not difficult to find. We do have morphing items in these HOPs, which I kept forgetting to look for. The HOPs seemed few and far between during the demo. Hopefully we will have more as the game progresses. You can switch to a match stones game, which is simply a match 3 game. Puzzles aren't difficult, although a couple took me longer than I expected them to. Don't know if it happens in every puzzle with multiple things to do, but in one puzzle, I was able to skip part without skipping the entire puzzle. That is a great feature for me. There is a jump map, but jumping was about all it was good for. When you click to open a picture in the map, it was a little blurry. The hint system is very helpful and it did transport to longer locations, which came in quite handy, since you do quite a lot of back tracking.
Collectibles are a bit disappointing again. All we have are 35 signs, which look like multi-colored scorpions. These are not as easy to see as you think. They have done a pretty nice job of hiding and blending them into the scenery. Still would have been nice to have something else as well.
This addition makes lucky number 13 in this series. I have all of the others, but not all are CE versions. This story reminded me a lot of the Cadenza series, which I love. Still, it is it's own story and is well done. The game is not really challenging, but it flows very well, so it is easy to follow and objectives are clear. The story was interesting enough to make me want to play it out and see where it goes. I think most levels of players will find this game worthy of a CE. Yes, I am going to add the CE to my collection.
As always, try it for yourself and see what you think. We all have different tastes in games and you may not care for this one at all. Thanks for the reviews. Show less

Wish my Spanish was a bit more elaborate to describe my enjoyment of Myths of the World: Behind the Veil.
Having been made redundant, we are going to celebrate Día de Muertos with family and friends. But, well, it’s a HOPA and soon enough we are in trouble because not everyone is happy with the festivities.
Some elements in the story look very familiar: lovers that have been separated, someone trying to get a deal not crossing the line between life and death.
The setting is beautifully done. I could smell the marigolds, feel the breeze on my face, sense the discomfort when the fiesta was interrupted.
The story enfolds well enough. But as so often I wished for a diary where I could look up dialogues again. It’s a game, not a book, I can’t turn back a few pages.
I relished most of the HO’s. In one, my ideas of jewellery collided with those of the makers of the game. Oh well ;)
The mini games were well done, some took very interesting turns on familiar themes, as the one with the thorns in the Bonus Chapter. From former gaming experience you expect having to perform a certain task, then it’s all different.
Of course not all were to my particular likings, but I enjoyed trying them. And, there is a Skip Button, it’s a game, not an exam.
There were details I really loved: the Player Character makes notes on her hand. Haven't seen people doing this nowadays.
The moment of shock when a snake curled up „my“ arm. Luckily it turned out to be helpful.
Music in a game is very important to me. Some tunes were great, some were too soothing, too monotonous for my taste. But no deal braker, I turned the music down and listened to more spirited, sparkling sounds.
Another issue: the final battle. I’m not a fan of them, I think they are not necessary. Let’s talk, find consensus, not fight!
And Diego, our talking skull - never had the honour of working with one before - he was a bit lame, he could have been much cheekier in the few lines he had.
The Bonus Chapter was stunningly beautiful, different, out of the current gaming world I’ve seen in a long time. I only wish it would be possible to play it again and again and again, simply brilliant! Outstanding!
In a book I can go back and reread passages as often as I want. It would be great to be able to do this in a game as well.
Other extras: will get the collectibles I’ve missed later on, will replay the HO’s and puzzles, souvenirs already gathered.
Despite my personal reservations: congrats! The game is on my list of seasonal games. Show less
