I have owned all the MOAI games and this one is very challenging, but not impossible to gold every level as I did.
What players need to know is that they need those backpack items installed on their characters and upgraded as soon as possible. To get the items needed for the backpacks, every inch of each level needs to be explored, all merchants/collectors and traders dealt with, and all plates and figurine pieces found. Judicious use of the spell signs can slow down enemies, mitigate disasters and increase production. Without them, it would be hard to gold the levels.
PROs:
- increased difficulty from previous versions
- new spells and uses for them
- new protagonists and dangers
- dual play tracks: one for the son and one for daughter
- beautiful graphics
- smooth, interesting character & item movements
- bonus levels for gold level players
CONs:
- I miss the character's map portraits changing as they acquire skills and implements/body ornaments
- not enough explanation of the new spells & signs. For new MOAI players, there could be too much expectation that they already know how to play the MOAI games
- paths to bonus levels not clearly defined. 3 previous levels must be gold to reach a bonus. Not always easy to tell which 3 those are.
- daughter and son need more character development
Suggestion to developers: add a 1st, robust tutorial level (that can be skipped) to help new players and introduce spells. Show players how to use the backpack, runes, signs and equipment to best advantage. Show less
I recommend this game!

It has been several hundred years since the comet has passed over the lost island of Tapa-Tui. During this rare celestial event, the high priests hold a ceremony to honor the spirits of the elements, and ask for their protection. When Fimi-Am, the High Priest becomes ill, the Chief's twin children, Hika-Ri and Kao-Ri volunteer to perform the traditional rituals. Before performing the ritual, they must find four ancient constructions, known as the Elemental Gates, and learn to use mana and negotiate with the spirits of the elements. And so the saga continues......
Moai has always been one of my favorite Time Management game series, because it's not just a point and click here and there game, you actually have to use strategy! Moai V is crazy busy, and crazy challenging, right from the get go! (don't worry, there's an easy untimed mode) I actually thought about playing each level in the easy mode first, and then creating a second profile to replay the level in the timed mode, because if you don't do things just right, it's hard to finish the level with all 3 stars! These levels are certainly some of the busiest levels I've seen, and it's easy to overlook some minute tasks, not to mention making the right trading decisions to allow you to reach level goals.

Each level has treasure chests available which contain valuable artifacts and bonuses such as the Sandals of Speed which give the Moai a little more speed to get the job done. There are several different Artifacts to earn that will help you progress by increasing resources by a specific percentage, and other perks such as that. The Artifacts are kept in your backpack and you can choose a handful to apply before each level if you choose. Because you are playing this episode as the twins, both characters backpacks can be equipped.
There are the usual Time Management tasks to remove obstructions from pathways, plant crops for food, build sawmills for wood, quarries to produce stone, gold mines to build, repair destroyed property, fix broken bridges, collect resources, trade goods at the market and from merchants. Some of the building sites give you the choice of which building to construct, and you'll have to build them strategically in order to complete level goals. Trading items with merchants also have several options as well as quantities, which are super exciting, especially when playing in a Timed mode, it truly get the adrenaline flowing!
I can't say that I'm thrilled with the Collector's Edition version, because for me personally, I don't see the need for a few wallpapers and music soundtracks, especially for twice as much money, but I will say that if you don't mind the price, you won't be disappointed in this TM game.

Yes, this game is extremely challenging. Yes, there are times where it is not clear what to do. Yes, this game will take a great deal of time to complete .
But, isn't that what a really great time management game is all about? It is also a strategy game; you must determine the strategy of not only which way to go, but which artifacts, magic runes, and spells to use to complete each level. The further along you go, the more complicated and challenging.
Yet, there is a great deal of satisfaction once a level is won.
Those of us who absolutely TM games often complain about the lack of these games. Then, a developer such as this, who is known for their outstanding TM games gives us we want, and we still complain, we tend to complain they are too hard, too challenging without truly giving them a chance.
I will say, yes, this game is not one for a beginner TM players (play this series in order, and it will make more sense and become a tad bit easier). But, I hang my head in shame for originally not recommending this game.
I don't think people realize the level of work that goes into developing a time management game. Every single movement, every single path, strategy, artifact/spell/magic rune has to work perfectly when chosen. Add to the myriad choices players make, the program must "think" to make it work or not work. Add to that the time challenge. Then, after all the development, there are hours and hours and hours of testing to ensure that all components work as they should.
So, all that said, I highly recommend this game, especially for seasoned TM players. For those new to TM games, do this series in sequence as previously suggested. For those who love this type of game, I hope you try, like and recommend the game. Otherwise, one cannot complain when developers are hesitant to put in the time/expense to give us TM games if we don't buy them. Just sayin' ... Show less

I've been a Moai fan since the beginning. Moai V is far more challenging then the previous ones. I'm going through again (3d time) trying to get gold (and be able to play the bonus rounds) on every level but they are hard. Takes a lot more strategy and thinking, planning. I've even been writing down stuff like "okay, the idol eats 300 food, 300 iron, 300 manna" or whatever I need to plan ahead and ...Show more

I've even been writing down stuff like "okay, the idol eats 300 food, 300 iron, 300 manna" or whatever I need to plan ahead and prep for. I'm pretty sure I won't get all gold. I like the challenge. You do only have two modes: non-timed or timed. I do wish that you could turn off the "dialogues" before each level--when you're replaying the same level 10 tiems in a row, I really don't need the dialogue anymore and it just slows stuff down. Once you on in a level, you can click the Menu button and select "Guide" which gives you a kind of vague idea of what you might want to consider doing to win the level, but you can still vary that too. On some levels, the guru guys only give you more resources so you can sometimes skip them and stlil win--but sometimes the guru guys give you needed special acquisitions like stuff to make your potions. Haven't figured out how to effectively use the portions. When you play as the girl, you don't get to accessorize as much as you can when you play as the boy. If you love a challenge and are ready to use your brain, this is a fun game. Show less

I see the complaints. Give it a chance. If you didn't play the previous versions it might be a little confusing. The artifacts and spells you receive in the game will help you reach gold. There are around 48 levels and additional bonus levels. At level 3 the path splits. Both sides have to be completed. I love a good challenge.
