The Curse of Ophelia is the 13th installment of Puppetshow Series by AMAX Interactive though it reminds me of previous editions developed by ERS.
Your cousin Angela (lead actress playing the lead lady in the theater production of Ophelia) has been attacked recently and left in a comatose state and doctors are unable to find the source of her condition. You receive a letter from Angela's husband Leroy who believes she's been cursed after receiving a Puppet Doll! Time to investigate the theater, so you ask Beatrice (Angela's best friend at the theater) for more info. When you arrive at the theater you learn Beatrice is the replacement for Angela in the role of Ophelia. During questioning, Beatrice describes the incident including a description of a "cursed doll". She also tells you of her own experience with the curse and how the curse left her with strange looking birthmark on her arm with symbols that quickly spread over her entire body.
It seems as though there's something really strange about this "cursed doll". Rumor says that someone sends the Puppet Doll before the play premiers and causes any actress who plays the role of Ophelia to eventually Die!!! Who is behind this mysterious curse and why are they targeting actresses at the theater?
Here are the character's you encounter in this wonderfully weird mystery:
◾Angela
The protagonist's cousin who works as a stage actress at the town's theater. She fell under the curse that targets all the women who played the role of Ophelia.
◾Leroy
Angela's husband. He aids the protagonist in the investigation
◾The Theater's Director
A mysterious man who owns the theater that Angela works for.
◾Beatrix
Angela's co-worker who wants to play the role of Ophelia herself.
◾Doll Assistant
A mysterious doll given to Angela. She is rumored to be cursed.
◾Spider Puppets (missing from this edition).
I was really engaged in the story of this edition and the wacky gameplay mechanics. I think casual gamers and fans of this series will enjoy this latest chapter in the on-going saga of the Puppetshow series. Cheers Show less
I recommend this game!

You can tell a lot of thought and hard work went into the making of this game. The hidden object scenes were very diverse throughout the game and the ones where items were actually hidden the objects were not just thrown out in plain sight you had to do a little searching. The games were fun and different from what you normally see in these types of games. They too were very diverse.
I love ERS because they are almost always straightforward and logical and you aren't running all over the place trying find things that have been so well hidden it becomes frustrating.
There was a story and it remained throughout the game, you actually learn a little more and more as you play until you have the whole picture. There's never a time when you don't know why you are doing what you are doing or what's going on. In other words a cohesive storyline.
You do have a little slightly scary yet adorable little doll as a helper but you do not use her very often. I love having a little helper but I know many do not. She is not intrusive and like I said before she's not used all that much.
This game was by far better than many I've played or demoed recently. I did not find one missing zipper pull, I did not have to oil anything rusted and I wasn't searching all over for amulets and keys to open EVERYTHING!
The only flaw for me is the music, for the most part, I'm not overly fond of the music it does tend to make me feel anxious, really no biggie I just turn down the volume for a bit.
Fun, relaxing, highly enjoyable game that I highly recommend!

I went away from all HOPA's for over a year except MCF even though I HATE EPIX. They are just so-so now, IMO. I went into Time management games instead.
This current PuppetShow has brought me back to hope in HOPA's. I will start trail versions again on other games, and I hope I come across another one like this one again soon.
Enjoy.. play what you love and have a blast!

I swim with the fish that have regretted the recent entries in this one-time terrific series. Now we have something to grab back onto: PuppetShow - The Curse of Ophelia.
The mechanics and the like have been described quite well by others here. Can't rate the music (muted it) and if I'm looking for a real good story I typically read a really good book.

You were wanting to visit your cousin Angela anyway, but when an urgent letter arrives from her husband, Leroy, you hurry to her home. Leroy wrote that she was dying of a curse and you hope to be of some help. Leroy thinks the curse was brought on by a mechanical doll she received while she was rehearsing the part of Ophelia at the theater.
Good stuff: There are all the elements you expect from a PuppetShow game - people in bad masks, a theater, and some semblance of a story. There are also lots of dolls in this chapter in the series. There are HOPs, mini-games, puzzles, and decent artwork.
Bad stuff: The story leaves much to be desired in the way of logic. You arrive at Angela's home in time to see a masked figure threatening her through the front door. As you run around the front yard completing tasks to get inside, heavy black smoke seems to be escaping from the doors and windows of the house. Opening that front door you are looking down a long hall to Angela's bedroom. So how did you see that masked figure? Was he just posing near the front door for your sake? Where did the smoke come from and where did it go? More to the story line, why a masked figure if this was a cursed doll problem? And why threaten a comatose patient?
Leroy sent you a key to get in the house as he doesn't want to leave the comatose Angela even to answer the door, but then he goes with you to the theater, leaving the house wide open!
(Wait. Where was Leroy when she was being threatened by the masked figure?)
There is so little engagement with the other characters, there is no reason to care what happens to them.
While the game is better than the latest disappointing offerings in this series, it also seems as though it should be in a different series altogether. The "cursed" doll is a windup toy rather than a puppet and the only other animated figures in the Demo were part of a door lock.
The last few PuppetShow games were so bad that this one almost shines in comparison.
Unfortunately that only makes it average at best.
Please try the demo to see if this is a buy for you. Show less

I think it would be beneficial for Amax to throw all the puppets into a giant HOPA scrapyard and figure out a whole new series plot. I think they have worked this puppet/doll scenario to death, and from every angle possible, it had a good run, but I think it's just time to move on to a new show.

I think it would be beneficial for Amax to throw all the puppets into a giant HOPA scrapyard and figure out a whole new series plot. I think they have worked this puppet/doll scenario to death, and from every angle possible, it had a good run, but I think it's just time to move on to a new show.
These guys have made a valiant effort at trying to breathe life back into these stringless puppets, but for me, it just isn't working. When this series was first introduced, Puppet Show was receiving mid to upper 4 star ratings, and rightfully so, they had excellent storylines that had never really been done before. Now, after 13 total games in the series, most gamers are growing weary of the cookie cutter games, and they receive average ratings dipping down in the mid to lower 2 stars. I just didn't find The Curse of Ophelia that interesting, in fact, muddling through 5 Chapters (+ Bonus Chapter in the CE) seemed more like a curse than Ophelia's Curse was. Here's a recap of my review to help you decide which version, if either, is right for you:
Everyone knows that ALL porcelain dolls are possessed, except for Angela and Beatrice, who were so anxious to become leading ladies, that they chose to ignore the Curse of Ophelia! Angela was cast to play the leading role of Ophelia, in the theaters latest production, a role nobody else was willing to portray. Everyone's too afraid, because of the superstitions surrounding Ophelia, and anyone who dares assume the role, for they too will suffer the consequences. Accepting this role was Angela's first mistake, not believing in the Curse of Ophelia, was her second and biggest mistake, a deadly mistake!
I must admit, I was a little confused by this latest PuppetShow game, where's all the puppets? Yes there are plenty of dolls, creepy dolls, but this is a PuppetShow game not a CreepyDollShow game?? Isn't this game supposed to be about towns that are run almost entirely by puppets? Isn't that creepy SpiderPuppet supposed to be spying on my investigation? Well the good news is that this game is somewhat better than the last several games offered, perhaps because they have toned down the weirdness factor. In my opinion, however, they should have just started a completely different series, such as a spin off about dolls, without any puppet references.
I was also more impressed with the CE bling offered this go round, which was almost void in the last few PuppetShow games. In the Collector's Edition version, there are Collectible Flowers in each scene as well as a very well hidden Morphing Snowflake, that is supposedly in every scene as well, but there wasn't one available within the dressing room location, even the SG doesn't show it's existence there????
The Hidden Object Scenes were much better than offered in the last few games, but there are no Alternative games available. Most of the main HOP's are Interactive List finds, but there are also some Keywords in Sentence finds and Silhouetted Shape finds. There are actually more Zoom Zone HOP's than regular ones, that require finding a handful of Silhouetted Shapes, Symbols or Fragments.
The Mini Games are just okay, with nothing new offered, and fairly simple to solve. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo:
1) Select two pie shaped puzzle sections to swap to complete the picture.
2) Swap Mask halves correctly, then place gears of different sizes until all gears are turning.
3) Play the bells in the correct order according to the clue shown.
4) Use the reference clues to select the correct flowers.
5) Complete the picture by sliding tiles to allow the key to slide out.
6) Select the dolls in the correct order as described in the clue.
7) Use directional arrow buttons to guide your horse without hitting obstacles along the path.
The Collector's Edition version has 7 Wallpapers, 16 Concept Art pictures, 5 Screensavers, 4 Music Soundtracks, 21 Movie Videos (WOW, seems like this is just filler so they don't have to offer actual game play features) 11 re-playable Mini Games, 19 re-playable Hidden Object Scenes, 20 Achievements to earn, Collectible Flowers (with origin descriptions) Morphing Snowflakes in each location, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter.

Options allowed you to change the hint and skip time which was good because the puzzles were not well explained and could be confusing and tedious. The HOS were not always clear as to what to do; almost like a developer was trying to create something different, but never quite got it right.
The storyline basically got lost amid all the wandering around and an inventory which got way too full. Instead of a fun, smooth play, I spent time just trying to figure it out just what I was suppose to do. The transporter map was also awkward. Actually if I had paid full price I would have felt not worth money spent, but since I got it with a credit I'll just chock it was a bad mistake. I think its time to end the Puppet show series. I was so disappointed with this game I had to write my first review after playing HO for years. The puzzles were very simplistic, the storyline left me wondering who could write such drivel, and play was repetitive. There were attempts to add a bit of change to the hidden object scenes but they just seemed tedious rather than intriguing. I use to love this series but I suggest it be retired.
