I almost didn't play this one because the last Dupin, Dark Tales was really bad. Dupin looked like he had been sleeping in an alley and the gameplay was not good. However, Dupin had cleaned up and was very congenial.

I have started to turn away from these adventure like games as they have recently become mundane so this was refreshing.

Getting really tired of everything that comes out anymore is a Collectors game...everyone knows those are a waste of money. Something has changed with Big Fish, and not for the better. Show less

In this twelfth game of the never-ending Dark Tales series, you are to assist Detective Dupin in the investigation of an ominous case. The McDougall family has disappeared from their new house, known grimly as the Devourer of Souls. The first question I had into this game was “how is this any different from all the previous Dark Tales?”. Dark Tales: Edgar Allan Poe’s Morella feels like a game we have played way too many times before. The storyline is predictable, the so-called twists can totally be seen coming, the characters are mundane and forgotten, and even the environment feels familiar. The production of Dark Tales: Edgar Allan Poe’s Morella is a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand, the quality of the graphics remains impressive and the special effects are sufficient to spice up the otherwise boring game. On the other hand, the tedious and flat soundtracks certainly do not help make the game any better and the uninspired scene design just adds to the dullness of the game. As expected, Dark Tales: Edgar Allan Poe’s Morella features a cookie-cutter HOPA gameplay. The adventure part is nothing to be excited for and the hidden object scenes are not groundbreaking by any means. If there is one thing that this game did right, it is the puzzles. Some of the puzzles in this game are surprisingly original and creative, with just the right level of difficulty. It is also worth mentioning that members may want to visit the "game forum" of the CE version as you may encounter technical difficulties which may or may not allow you to play this game even though this is the SE version. Dark Tales: Edgar Allan Poe’s Morella ticks in at the four hour mark, while the bonus chapter is approximately an hour long. Given the ho-hum quality of the game, I do not recommend the Collector’s Edition unless there is a massive sale or you have extra cash to spare. The bonus section contains the usual; a strategy guide, wallpapers, concept art, screensavers, soundtracks, videos, a jigsaw puzzle, achievements, collectibles, re-playable hidden object scenes, and re-playable puzzles. Fans and fellow reviewers; I think AMAX/ERS have some of the most interesting and entertaining series in the BFG catalog and it would be nice to see a new series emerge from these developers. One of the major problems with AMAX Interactive (formerly known as ERS Game Studios) is that they never know when to end a series. Cheers!

I like the story and gameplay. Not crazy about most of the puzzles in this game. Had some different hops. I liked how large the hops were. It made it easier to see them.

By the third time, I wished I had the guide but this is a SV, not a CE. There are lots more puzzles where you have to start at the beginning if you made a mistake. I didn't like this.

I used a free coupon for this game that I received from buying CEs. I had one glitch that I turned the game off and on again. It worked after that.

My detail awards goes to the ten strands of pearls and the roaming bunny.

This game seems similar in style as the other series by this maker. The other series from this maker are Grim Façade, Shadow Wolf Mysteries, Redemption Cemetery, Spirits of Mystery, Haunted Legends and Puppetshow. Show less

First, I want to make clear anything I say negative about this game was due to a glitch I encountered, either caused by the game or my computer, which did taint my feelings somewhat. I was almost finished with the game when my computer just shut down. When I restarted the game I expected to pick up where I left off, but no, it said I was corrupted ...Show more

This is posted after playing the entire game.

I really did enjoy this game. Dupin was different in this one than previous Dark Tales,, but he lived up to expectations and let me do all the work. Wouldn't have it anyother way. I think I like how he changes from game to game. Last time he was shaggy and this one clean cut and good looking.

The graphics were really good. Not cartoonish yet with the appearance of being drawn. Colors were excellent as were the voice overs. They just need to give the option of the detective being male or female. I spent most of my time looking for my high heels to play the part. Effects went along with the action in the scene as did the music. It wasn't intrusive at all. Matter of fact I'm hard pressed to remember any of it.

The hidden object scenes were well done. A tad bit labored looking for 12 keys and 15 of this and 12 of that. Thankfully there were no silhouettes. The mini games were not good to me. When I thought I understood what to do, I couldn't get it to work. I was hoping when I skipped it would show me how it was done, but it didn't. One that comes to mind was moving a ball through pipes. I placed the elbow but couldn't get the ball to go through. Luckily I used the custom and the skip charged quickly.

Others will go into the story for you. I'll just say it kept my attention throughout the game. It was predictable, but good. Even though I'm over the ghosts, goblins, witches and things that go bump in the night, Poe is known for his horror genre so I accept that.

Give the demo a shot and see if you don't find this to your liking as I did. This has turned into my current favorite game. Show less

Haven't played EAP in a long time. They used to be so gory, but this one was not bad!
Pretty good and pretty long for 4 chapters.
A few times I got stuck and was going around in circles, but I unstuck myself!
Puzzles and HOs were pretty good!
Story was not bad, either.
I enjoyed this one!

I must say, this is one of the best Dark Tales game in a very long time. I'm not saying impressive, just better. Although there are only four chapters, they are fairly long, and for the first time, I found the Bonus Chapter to be more interesting than the main game. There isn't really anything exciting that happens after the demo, but they do try to add a sense of urgency to the game by giving you an hourglass, that shows your remaining time of finding a cure. I found several mini games after the demo to be senseless and annoying, such as having to drag an item by pulling the icon that barely budges for a sense of resistance, and the repetitive amulet puzzle of matching runes, just seemed pointless and far too simple. If you're a fan of Dark Tales, this will probably be an excellent game, but for me, it moves way to slow, and borderlines boring. Here's a recap of my review to help you decide which version, if either, is right for you

Apparently I have been too critical of these games lately because everyone else seems to love them, but this game is no different than the last 11 games in the series. Nothing changes, same graphics, same sights and sounds, same tasks, same puzzle and HOP styles, and basically the same story line.

For the life of me, I can't differentiate one charter from another, other than Detective Dupin! Louisa looks no different than Marie Roget, or any main character, Mark looks no different than any other male character either. The only reason Lilly looks different is because she has black eyes, and Dark Tales rarely features kids in their games, but I'm confident the next child will have red hair and braids!
I knew the second I freed Mark, that I was going to need to whip up an ointment for bandages, and didn't I have to free the last female character from a giant water tank, the same character that had an incurable "condition" just like Louisa? Do all women in EAP's novels have an untreatable illness? Do all of the manors have evil spirits? Are all Amulets/Medallions evil spiritually connected? Do all evil spirits have the same M.O of binding doors with thick vines? Do all statues, doors, mirrors, drawers, mailboxes, and picture frames require an emblem to access them, emblems that are ALWAYS missing. Have all evil spirits been banished, they apparently don't exist in the 1900's, because all Dark Tales seem to take place in 1840. These poor people, not only are they burdened with having to solve a puzzle just to enter the next room, but they always get trapped by their own devices!

I will admit that the Collector's Edition Fortune Cookies that encase a Jigsaw Puzzle Piece is much more creative than trying to hide a puzzle piece, that always sticks out like a sore thumb, however, the jigsaw puzzle itself is far too easy. Why do they have to show the outlines, can't they at least give you an Easy/Hard difficulty mode? As far as a Collector's Edition version goes, however, just offering puzzle pieces is pretty lame, and certainly not worthy of the CE price tag. At least offer Morphs or some other feature, is almost as if this game were from the 1800's.

The Hidden Object Scenes are pretty basic too. Most of the HOP's require you to find Multiples of objects such as 12 Keys, 15 Pages, and one HOP was a simple Listed Item find without interactions! Well I guess I should be grateful that they no longer seem to be doubling up on the same scene, like they did in the 1700's!

The Mini Games are okay, but very similar to all the other games available in Dark Tales, and I am grateful that I haven't had to use a Memory Device to catch flying orbs of lights! Some of the games are available in Casual or Hard difficulty modes. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo:

1) Use wooden angled pieces to guide each ball into it's matching colored bowls at the bottom.

2) Position the symbols according to the clue, by moving them along the tracks to an empty space. Use directional arrows to rotate the rim.

3) Select the red buttons to rotate groups of valves until all valves turn green.

4) Use rotation and flip buttons on each wooden tree puzzle piece, and place correctly.

5) Select the correct symbols, one on the page, one on the field to match the symbols shown.

6) Click on pairs of matching symbols to reveal the secret area where the lines intersect.

7) Recreate the symbol shown by drawing lines on a honeycomb grid.

What is going on with those symbols floating around like illusions every time you become... well, something else?! Not a fan of the Edgar Allan Poe series and this time was no different. This game needs a clear design and focus on the gameplay. Just start over, guys! Make it make sense!
