Halloween Stories Defying Death was surprisingly a game that I did enjoy. I am not much into spooky games but this one really was rather tame compared to some of the other Halloween themed games that we have had over the past several years.
The game had an interesting storyline that was easy to follow and it did make sense. So often the back story of some games seems to get bogged down or last but this one held to the storyline without getting bogged down or side-tracked.
Another thing that surprised me while I played the game is that I found myself enjoying the puzzles. Maybe it’s because I enjoy puzzles that are not too difficult, but I think it was most likely that I happened to like the types of puzzles that were included in the game. At any rate, I did find myself playing all of the puzzles without skipping any of them which is highly unusual for me. In fact, I think I liked the puzzles more than I did the HOS. I found the HOS a bit boring and, particularly, in the silhouette style HOS the items were difficult to figure out.
Even though the game is not exceptional, it still was entertaining. Defying Death is a game that I will play again since I know that I missed some of the fragments and morphing objects. I think that I was so engrossed in the storyline and moving forward in the game that I overlooked hunting for the collectibles at times.
For me, the game was one I purchased as soon as the demo ended. I found that I wanted to continue playing to see how it all ended. If you want an easy sort of Halloween game, then I can recommend Halloween Stories Defying Death as one you might enjoy. Happy gaming! Show less

Everyone knows you can't escape your destiny, no matter how hard you try, or how far you run. The Grim Reaper is coming, he is coming for you. There wasn't supposed to be any survivors, you only thought you were the lucky one...but they were the lucky ones because you, my friend, are being hunted down like a wild animal by Death himself...good luck with your destiny!
I really enjoyed this story (and the CE bonus chapter wasn't bad either!) The puzzles were rather easy, but I thought they were fun, and the HO scenes have vastly improved lately! The graphics are amazing as usual, and the developer seems to have gotten the hint about our bitterness towards the never-ending emblem-placing scenario (thank you!!) but mostly, I just enjoyed finally having a creepy-themed game rather than a fantasy-themed game even though I'd prefer a REAL horror game and a REAL hard-core or at least a game geared towards seasoned players!
Helper/Gadget:
There are NO gadgets or Helpers in Halloween Stories: Defying Death.
Morphing Objects/Collectibles: (CE version only)
There are 11 Halloween Collectibles that are actually kind of cool, but with every Elephant game, the CE bling seems to be dwindling??? There are 26 Morphing Objects that morph at a decent speed and for a change aren't the size of baby elephants!! One Zoom Zone in each scene has a Jigsaw Puzzle Fragment (18 total) that automatically assembles a Grim Reaper picture, it's actually supposed to represent replacing the glass onto the frame.
Hidden Object Scenes:
There are only 8 Hidden Object Scenes +5 in the CE Bonus Chapter, several of which are smaller zoom zone HO's that usually precede the main HO scenes. What I am noticing from this developer in the last 3-4 game, is a marked improvement in the Hidden Object Scenes! The objects are smaller, they are clearly making an attempt to blend the objects into the scenery and choosing objects that will blend into the scene rather than stick out like a sore thumb...when developers try to improve...I always notice! There are Interactive List Finds, Silhouetted Shape Finds, Matching Pairs, Related Objects, Associated Objects, Keywords in Sentence Finds, Swatch Finds, and Multiples of the same Items. There are no alternate games available.
Mini-Games:
There are 13 Mini-Games +6 in the CE Bonus Chapter. They did a good job with variety and putting twists on standard games and making them Halloween-themed. The puzzles were easy to complete, but for the most part, they were fun puzzles rather than an insult to my intelligence if that makes sense? I usually like Elephant Games because most of them are mechanical type puzzles where you tinker with fuses, electrical panels, or gauges and they always seem doable and never frustrating.
Bonus Chapter (Collector's Edition version only)
Gertrude, the Patron of Souls, will grant the Grim Reapers wish to become human on one condition...well, actually three conditions! He must pass three trials by rescuing three entities in dire need...kind of like a Halloween-Scrooge hybrid.
This is a decent story and of average-length spanning over 8 Scene Locations with 6 Mini-Games and 5 Hidden Object Scenes. You will search for the remaining 2 Halloween Collectibles, 8 Morphing Objects, and 7 Puzzle Fragments which allows you to complete the Grim Reaper picture (it's more like placing the glass on the frame)
Collector's Edition Extra's
5 Wallpapers, 1 Jigsaw Fragment Picture, 4 Music Soundtracks, 22 Halloween Mask Achievements, (2 of the masks don't show up on the rack, you can scan the cursor to read the achievement, but once you earn the achievements "Heartbreaking Margin" and "Distressing Power" those two masks vanish!) 13 Replayable Mini-Games, 13 Replayable Hidden Object Scenes (within the Archives Room) 26 Morphing Objects, 18 Zoom Zone Jigsaw Puzzle Fragments (automatically fills in the Grim Reaper Picture, 11 Collectible Halloween Decorations, 3 Main Chapters +Bonus Chapter, and a Built-In Strategy Guide.

I do have an additional comment, though, about game reviews. Please, if you are having technical issues with a game, this should not be part of the review. I had no technical issues while playing this game, but even if I did, these reviews are supposed to be related to the game play and not to describe glitches that occurred. I know such things are frustrating, but that is what Customer Support is for. And also please remember that just because you have technical problems with a particular game, this does not mean that everyone will. Thank you for listening. :-) Show less

The collectibles left a lot to be desired....only 11 figurines and 26 morphs....and around 20 fragment shards that fill in a picture in the bonus content. Not a big deal. There are NO indicators for these during game play and there needs to be because, although the collectibles are listed in the SG, the screenshots are so tiny I could hardly see them. This goes for all the screen shots in the SG. All that space in the SG pages, and they only provide teeny tiny pictures. I missed some shards because of this and found you CANNOT go back to collect anything. The page in the bonus content containing your collectible figurines has so much room for more, I thought for sure I missed some, but no. Room for improvement and generosity needed here.
For the most part this is a player friendly game and well balanced with puzzles and HOS. The HOS were creatively done and variated in styles. Enjoyed some of the puzzles, also. You are allowed a replay of 13 puzzles and 13 HOS.
Another plus in the game is that there is not an excess of going back and forth, which allows for more enjoyment. The transportable map is very helpful. You can access the collectibles from there, also.
Elephant could have definitely been more generous in their CE content, but overall, it is refreshing to have a game that is different than the others that are created by the same developer all the time. I am sure I will be playing it again.
I recommend this game!

Graphics, not stellar but still a good effort. One dimensional characters that I really didn't even care about. VO's were good. The bonus game flowed well into the main game. The morphers, collectibles and puzzle pieces were a challenge to find, for sure. I enjoyed the puzzles- some were tough, some easier. Yeah, some of the objects you have to find to move the story forward don't make sense but at least its not the dreaded locked mailbox that takes three parts to unlock and the mailbox contains no mail, just toenail clippers...cuz we all know we keep our toiletries in a locked mailbox...wonder if the mailman has the key? That must be why I haven't been receiving my mail lately. Hey, there are plenty of worse Halloween games out there-I know, I played one before this one. That one was horrendous. Defying Death is a good game- not great- but good and worth playing. And, I swear, this is my last Halloween game this year. I know I've said that before but this time I really mean it! I wish the game play was better integrated with the storyline but there are fewer emblems (again, kudos). When the HOS and mini-games/puzzles are part of the plot, the play is seamless, and the story's the thing. That doesn't happen in this game (too often) but the graphics and storyline are brilliant in both the main game and bonus chapter. That's a solid game for me.

You play the role of Dylan in this episode and the Grim Reaper is ready to to offer him a deal but first he must save three of his close friends; Roy, Grace and Ted. Each of them trapped in their own Death Defying Dilemma which the Grim Reaper has orchestrated. Can you save your friends and yourself before the Reaper claims your soul? Find out how to alter fate in this frightfully fun Halloween Story, Defying Death....
After the year-to-year success of the Halloween Stories series, Elephant Games has created another excellent edition to their holiday-themed series. The storyline is thoroughly entertaining and the unexpected twists distinguishes it from all the other Halloween theme games out there. I also love the classic jump-scares and spooky-looking decorations that appear throughout the game.
Halloween Stories: Invitation (the first game in the series) is my personal favorite but I enjoyed this game equally as much as the first installment so I highly recommend you play both. If you are new to the series then play all them. You can binge play each of them and indulge yourself which will really put you in the mood for celebrating Halloween since it's only 3 weeks from today.....Cheers!

I kept looking at the download stats for this game and wondering why people were downloading in spite of less than stellar reviews. It is a good, cute game, mildly challenging and just right for the season. Play it if you have trick or treaters in the area. We do, and we must put our candy out and socially distance while keeping an eye on things. A little breath of fun.
