I enjoyed the demo very much, even though I didn't go to the end. The images in the first level were all lovely this time. I'm still unhappy that we can't move on to the next levels before completing the first one. The decision to purchase hinges on what's in the whole package, but sometimes I just take the plunge and sometimes it proves to be a reckless mistake.
If I let this continually bug me, my color by number collection isn't going to be expanding much. The other features of the game outweigh the bad one, so I bought today's new release. I'm glad I did, because I'm pleased so far with what I found in the other levels. There's enough variety in the subject matter to keep boredom away, although I would still like to see even more. The array of colors is good, but could be better, maybe some colors that are more vibrant or out of the ordinary. I really like the selection of textures that are used. They make an otherwise flat image look more "artsy", adding more interest and beauty to the piece.
I moved through most of the images in the first level effortlessly, they were easy and quick to complete, even the ones with many segments to them. The zoom feature is very helpful as usual and the hint feature is great for getting that last little hidden speck of color. Modern Art 3 is proving to be a good purchase, 64 images (wish there were more), minimal but helpful features as always. Relaxing entertainment for the "artist" like me, who wants the beauty without the messy clean-up. Show less

Several things to do to make it easier or harder.
1. Use a color for the highlighting that is totally different than what you are coloring. In a dark picture use a light color, IN a light picture use black or a dark color.
2. If you want to make it SUPER hard, slide that bottom black to white color bar all the way to the right and NO highlighting will be seen.

This is very much like the old timey paint by numbers except that the pictures are quite complex in most cases with lots of pleasant color and texture. To me this was the best of this type of game I've played so far. A buy for me for winding down at the end of the day or evening. Never frustrating but maintained my interest.

I love the Variations of these different Art Games which some are designed by other developers, the games maybe a little similar to each other, but however they are still "Great Games" to play, hours of relaxation & zone out time. Please Devs keep them coming, "More & Bigger" is better, lol...
Thank you Devs & BF

I did find that the music was nice and soothing (and I don't normally listen to music in other games as I find it distracting). The texture of some of the pictures was also different from each other.
Overall: if you like to keep a collection of the same type of games, then please check out the demo and see it for yourself. Show less

Finally, the Mac version works, but the PC version still shows up huge with no way to adjust the size to get to the options tab, but that's because my graphics card is really good and I have a large screen that not all games seem to be able to automatically adjust to my 4096 x 2304 display setting.
I still think there is an issue with chosen images, some of them are super boring while others, such as the first image shown in the synopsis, (autumn trees) was super intricate with 28 colors and a ton of teeny tiny areas. This type is more frustrating because some areas are impossible to find without using the Hint button, but it's also kind of like a Hidden Object game where the challenge is to find the areas as well as paint them.
Speaking of paint, that's exactly what Modern Art is all about because the colors vary in texture like a real painting! In some of the earlier versions, I complained that there weren't enough color variations to give the picture depth, in other words, he didn't use different shades of the same color side by side as a visual shading effect...so he created a new game genre, Polygon Art. That was cool, but Modern Art has some really amazing artwork.
There are still two options I think are necessary. When a picture has been completed you don't get to view the completed image in full size, nor do you get to revisit the completed image in full size. There should also be an option to download the completed images as Wallpapers..especially some of these beautifully painted images!
There are 64 images available but you are still forced to finish the first level before moving on to the next. I still don't understand this concept, why do I have to finish one level before proceeding? I'm sure everyone would like the ability to pick and choose from any level!
Each area has a number and you simply chose the corresponding color bubble from the palette (also numbered) on the right side. There is a Slider Bar that allows you to zoom in & out (there's a "fit" tab as well) you can also move the entire page around by right-clicking and dragging.
This game may not make sense to those who have never tried it, but it's super relaxing and totally Zen. Speaking of Zen, come join us at my new forum at thewoodsforum.boards.net ☯ Show less

I bought this a few months ago from another game site, and they also have Modern Art 4, 5, and 6, but I'm holding off until Big Fish gets those before I buy them. Makes sense since I'm a member of BF and not the other one. There are some very nice pictures in this one, but also some not so nice. About half and half. I'd like to see less pictures of single objects and more of scenery and pics with people and animals in them. And how thrilling is it to color a setting of dishes, or food??Boring. And more than a few of these scenery pics are too dark. I'd like to see more color. I like that you don't have to complete each level before playing the next, but you do have to color the first levels to go on. Don't they want us to see the other pictures before buying? I do admit that I haven't colored ALL the pics in this one simply because I didn't like them. I also wish they'd make the number big when you put your cursor on the spot. It's done on other color by #'s and it's a good feature. In any case I do own this one the the first two as well. It's relaxing to me to color these and I'm glad they're on the market. I'm getting burned out on HOG's and card games. I love match 3 but there haven't been really good ones lately. I see a lot of Time Management on here, and to be honest I can't understand why anyone would like those. But, to each his own. Now I'm hoping to see the other Modern Arts show up here since they are already in the market. Show less

On most of the 'paintings' why are the colours so dark, & borderline depressing? I can just about cope with the messy, blurred images. More picture variety is needed. A lot are plain boring. As others have mentioned, there should be an option to skip through levels, to choose which paintings I want to do, & avoid those I don't. This option would also show if more dark colours were used in most paintings. Then I wouldn't buy. I was hoping colours & picture variety would have improved this time, compared to the last 2,- which were extremely dark- but no change has been made. I certainly don't want to 'paint' a chopping board & knife, with a bit of fruit on the side. Another has slices of orange. There's a few a 3yr old could complete!
Some pieces are that small, my pointer struggles to colour in.
There is a zoom option, but I like to see the whole picture forming. Zooming in/out so many times, becomes tedious. Moving the colour palette up/down, requires multiple clicks to do so. More than a few times when I click to change colour, the palette moves up/down instead. Frustrating, to say the least. I will finish No. 3, as I've paid some hard earned money on it. There are other painting games with good bright colours & better picture variety, which I'll go back too, as they have nice, bright, happy colours.

Why do they have to make EVERY ONE of the types so that you can't turn off the hi-lighting. When the areas to paint turn grey it makes it way too easy. Why can't these developers add in a way to turn it off if you don't want the extra help. It's really annoying. Where is the fun if they tell you where to click all the time.
