I had to earn those goosebumps though, this game keeps you busy and on the edge of your seat. You are instructed to protect archeologists as they enter the tomb of an ancient leader. It was fun and challenging, two qualities ever present in my favorite game developers' games. Of course, the visuals and graphics are outstanding, but the real beauty to the game is the storyline and how the music compliments it. I actually felt like I was in China. EIPIX writers have a way of letting you identify with it's characters and 'get involved.' No one tops their opening credits which are spectacular. The surprise ending to the demo left me with my goosebumps and wanting to know how the H.E.L.P. agents get out of this one. An automatic buy for me, CE or SE, you can't go wrong with this one. Thanks, Mia. :) Show less

That said, the bonus chapter is on the short side, & for me, at least, was just so-so, so if you can live w/o the extras, the SE may be the better choice for you, as it does give excellent value. The HO scenes are varied & creative, & there's an excellent selection of mini-games, including quite a few I haven't seen before, & providing a good range in terms of degree of difficulty. There's touches of humor throughout, something I always appreciate, & wish more devs would incorporate in their games; there's even a three-part mini-game towards the end that literally made me laugh out loud. :D The graphics, as per usual w/ this dev, range from range from good to gorgeous. As regards the storyline, some pretty wild things happen, but fortunately, I've played enough HOPA games at this point that I'm able to suspend disbelief to whatever degree I need to over the course of a game. ;) The main game took me about five hours to complete, & I was in no hurry for it to be over, as it kept me entertained right up to the end. Needless to say, I highly recommend doing the demo, & seeing what you think. Happy gaming, all. :) Show less

As you may already know, I wasn't very impressed with this edition of Hidden Expedition when I first played the Collector's Edition. Then my curious side emerged and I began to search for more information on the Emperor, and he really is an interesting and important figure. I thought I would share 10 facts that I found to be the most interesting, if you're not interested just skip this paragraph to get to my review of the game itself.
#1-Qin Shi Huang became the king of the state of Qin at the ripe old age of 13 (and he accomplished this feat without a cellphone, can you believe it!) His real name was actually Ying Zheng.
#2-Throughout China it was widely believed that the Emperor was illegitimate and his mother Zhao Ji was already pregnant when she married Yiren. Historians now theorize that this story was fabricated by Chinese Scholars to defame the Emperor, 2 fold because not only would that have made him an illegitimate child, but it would also mean that he was the son of a merchant and not of royal descent.
#3-The young Emperor was responsible for the unification of China when he conquered the remaining 6 kingdoms. For the first time in history, China was a united centralized state. (again without the use of a smartphone!)
#4-After he conquered the 6 other kingdoms Ying Zheng declared himself Qin Shi Huang. Translated, Qin means "of Qin" Shi means "first" and Huangdi was a new term meaning Emperor. (so technically he was responsible for a new word as well)
#5-To avoid political chaos after the unification, the Emperor unified the Chinese Script.
#6-The Great Wall of China was then constructed to keep the states safe. The famous wall actually connected various existing state walls.
#7-The Emperor was also responsible for the construction of the Lingqu Canal and the Sichuan Dujiangyan irrigation system. Along with the Great Wall, these three constructions are considered to be great feats of ancient Chinese engineering.
#8-Throughout most of Chinese history, the first Emperor of Qin (there were only 2 Emperors of Qin) was considered to be unpopular and inhumane. This opinion didn't change much until the late 19th century. Now it is believed that because the Emperor ordered books burned and had over 400 scholars executed, Confucian Scholars began to portray their ruler as a brutal tyrant.
#9-I'm almost finished I promise but the good stuff centers around the tomb! He was afraid of death and became obsessed with finding the elixir of life to become immortal.
#10-His tomb took 700,000 men 38 years to construct! The Emperor's mausoleum was larger than any city in the entire world at the time, and was intended to be paradise. The Emperor's tomb is protected by about 6,000 of the famous life sized Terracotta Army of Warriors, among the army are Chariots and 40,000 real bronze weapons! Their mission, was and is, to protect the Emperor in the afterlife from evil spirits.
After all these accomplishments, the first Emperor of Qin trusted his alchemists who created his "elixir of immortality" Ironically, the Emperor died during his visit to Eastern China after swallowing the mercury pills they created to give him eternal life. See I told you he was a fascinating person, so on to the review....
I have played thousands of games and lately I've been left to ponder an important question. Am I getting bored with these games or are they getting lame? The answer I can assure you is that I'm not bored playing a GOOD game, an interesting game. There have been some real duds lately by some of the top ranking series titles, because, in my opinion, the devs are working at lightning speed to release one game after another. I get it, I'm a business owner, and the bottom line is net profit, as long as a series is selling like hotcakes, you keep offering them until they aren't. Here's another thing I realized lately, the Lesser Known series (the one's who aren't working at breakneck speeds) are putting out REALLY GOOD games that are interesting and fun, such as Shadowplay and Bridge To Another World.
Your mission, should you decide to accept, is to babysit a really annoying character! H.E.L.P. will spare no expense to keep Professor Huang Son Jiang and his colleague Anna Chan happy, safe and secure. You will be expected to solve all of the intricate puzzles and locks located throughout the Emperor's Tomb, unassisted, while everyone rushes you from behind. The Tomb is full of Mercury and booby traps (that's latin for you're going to get killed by something you'll never see coming, yet they all seem to go off in front of you?) All's going well, then Sam gets hurt AGAIN, seriously, I think he does it on purpose to get promotions. Then out of nowhere, BAM, the unthinkable happens, bet you didn't see that one coming? Of course you saw that one coming because it's the same story, just with different characters!
No agent would be complete without lugging around a huge H.E.L.P Box. It's a good thing I lugged this 40 pound box down the mine with me because believe it or not, there are actually Fact Cards hidden in the Emperor's Tomb! Can you believe it? This tomb has been closed for thousands of years! Surely this is Ancient Alien work, how is that possible? With the Collector's Edition version, there are also 40 Hidden Signs and 22 Achievements to earn.
The Hidden Object Scenes are always the same in the HE series. That's not necessarily a bad thing, at least they are familiar. There are the typical Silhouetted Shape Finds that are usually presented in at least a couple of phases where once you find all the items, another set of shapes is presented and then a third set with a final object to find. There are also Interactive List finds and finding Keywords in a story being told. Each HOP has a Morphing Object available.
The Mini Games are the reason I continued the demo, they aren't bad at all and most are doable on the first attempt. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo:
1) Move levers until all of the arrows are in the green zone.
2) Complete the circle by selecting and dragging the animal shapes to the correct position.
3) Create paths for the dragons heads to fall onto it's matching body by using directional arrows to move rows of blocks below them.
4) Move the pieces to the center of the board to form a complete symbol, pieces must be selected in the correct order.
5) Arrange bells from the largest to the smallest animals shown on the bells.
6) Select the arrows to move the figurine to the yin-yang which stops whenever it encounters an obstacle.
7) Move the coins to the correct side of the board based on color, select arrows to select pairs of coins at a time.
8) Create a path for the mercury to flow from the pearl to the empty circle in a labyrinth.
The Collector's Edition has 17 replayable Puzzles, 15 replayable HOP's, 8 Concept Art pictures, 8 Wallpapers, 9 Music Soundtracks, a Souvenir Room, 40 Hidden Signs, 11 Videos, 22 Achievements, 15 Morphing Objects within the HOP's, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter, enjoy! Show less

In this tenth game in the Hidden Expedition series, the Eternal Emperor, we find ourselves dealing with the over-zealous, power hungry descendent of China’s first Emperor –Qin Shi Huang. You embark on this latest adventure at the unearthed archeological site of Emperor Qin’s tomb led by Professor Huang Son Jiang and his assistant Anna Chan. This is a memorable day for you and Sam as you join in the festivities to celebrate the opening of the tomb. Your job is to run interference against any booby traps or other obstacles that you might encounter and they are everywhere.
Everything about the game is fairly much signature of this developer with excellent graphics to great sound effects and voice overs. The game offers a custom setting for those of you who prefer to set up your gameplay options. There is a transporter type map but I don’t care for the way it opens in this game. Whenever I select the map there is a delay as it is part of the HELP toolkit. For some reason the map seemed a bit clunky.
The HOPS were excellent and varied with some being multi-level. There even seemed to be a bit more creativity in a few of the HOPS which keeps things interesting. The puzzles or mini-games were a bit too easy and I only found one to be a bit challenging during the demo but that was due to the instructions. Later in the game there were some more difficult puzzles that were fun to solve.
What I loved about the game is the storyline that held my attention. What I disliked about the game is the obnoxious professor who kept referring to me as a “little carp.” Talk about a demeaning attitude – this guy had it in spades!
The CE has all the regular things I like in games from this development team with collectibles, morphing objects, achievements, and all the other typical fluff.
The Hidden Expedition series is one I love and these games were among the first HOPA games I ever played. I own each game in the series and always eagerly await each new game to see what is next. The Eternal Emperor is an excellent addition to the series but falls short of being my favorite and can’t compare to the two set in the Smithsonian. I don't know but recently games from this top-tier developer just seem to be released at lightning speed and in many instances are very cookie-cutter. I gave the CE a 5-Star review but am knocking off a star because I feel the game could have better had it not been so predictable. I did purchase the game but please try the demo to see if The Eternal Emperor is a game you will enjoy as well. Show less

This could be perhaps, because I'm not really into the far east history as I have been the other areas explored by this series. It just wasn't as much fun as the others.
The graphics, music, and sound including voice overs were excellent. Colors were bright, colorful and clear, except when they weren't suppose to be.
I found the Hidden Object scenes very good. The games were varied from silhouette to list to interactive. Great mix and the items were well hidden. Had to use my hint more than usual. I actually did many of the mini games. That means one of two things. Either my patience level is increasing or they were simple. At my age, I would guess the latter. They were challenging and I think my only complaint with them was the repetition of one mini after another to get something. So far as helpers, there is the interactive map which transports and shows where you have something to do. Only difficulty with it, was you had to open your H.E.L.P. box to access the map. It just seemed like a waste of time when you should just be able to click map without waiting on a box to open. As usual, there are the fact cards which provide information about subject matter. Since I wasn't familiar with Qin dynasty, a lot of them were of no interest to me, but they did provide a lot of information.
Again, my lack of familiarity with the subject, other than the terracotta warriors, is very limited so the story, while it was simple to follow, did leave me a little bewildered at times. I really need to play this again and see if perhaps I missed something along the way.
This is a great game and I do recommend it. Be sure to try out the demo and decide for yourself. The demo will perhaps leave you wondering about different things, but those things are answered in the remainder of the game. Happy gaming. Show less

I started playing this game to. maybe, learn some history of an ancient emperor but instead all I did was go from one place to another unlocking everything in sight rather than progressing the story which is one of the biggest gripes I have with the new batch of games coming from the developers, all they want you to do is run back and forth.
Graphics aren't too bad in this one and are on the bright side which I like as opposed to all the dark games out there. I don't understand why they make those games so dark as if that's supposed to make the game better.
The characters are leaning toward the comical side but at least they look human and have a brain even if some of the voices make you think different. Question, why is the villain always drawn like, oh, I don't know, a villain? I knew as soon as I saw the whole crew who the baddy was and that was confirmed later. You'll know, too, as soon as you meet the crew.
I recommend this one with reservations. I would buy it just to add to my Hidden Expedition collection but only with game credits which sounds ridiculous since the credits are paid for in real money but it seems as though it's not.
All I have to add is play the demo and see if this is a higher than 3 star rating for you.

Maybe I just had a couple of 'off' days, but I found the bouncing back and forth to different scenes a bit disjointed. In order to complete a task inside a building, I had to go outside the building numerous times to find objects I needed back inside to solve one problem. I lost track of my objectives with all the back and forth.
The puzzles were either easy or hard, and some confusing as to the goal, even with the info explanation, but again, maybe that was just me being 'off'.
All in all it is an okay game, and I did enjoy the length (about 5 hours playing time) which made it worth my while, as did the trip back in history to the Qin dynasty.
Try it for yourself and decide, but I'd suggest playing the trial before you buy. Show less
