What is important to me is whether this game was fun to play.. and it WAS. It is back to the true detective story again... no ghosts or witches. fromInteresting EAP facts: the Baltimore Ravens were named after his poem, he almost used a parrot instead of a raven, he attended college for only 1 year because of gambling debts, he married his cousin, to date his bizarre death remains a creepy mystery!

Zula the Illusionist will be entertaining the guests at the Pendulum estate this evening, by invitation only. Detective Dupin will be a special guest star participant, so this will be a party to die for! Dupin had a bad feeling about this performance and begged Zula to reconsider, but "the show must go on" until it doesn't, and it did! It's a good thing you made it to the show on time, unfortunately, this show will be the Grand Final, but is it just an elaborate Grand Illusion?
This is the first Dark Tales game I have enjoyed in quite a long time, in fact, I almost gave The Pit and the Pendulum 5 stars, but it does have a few features that could've been better. The mini-games were a little too easy as far as the Hard Mode goes, but I still enjoyed more than I disliked. The HOP's lacked creativity, but I'm getting used to the fact that HOP's have probably run their course of options, which makes me doubt anything new could possibly be created at this point.
I love that Amax has included Morphing Objects and collectible Illusion Cards in this CE version, but the objects morphed too quickly and are easily spotted. My final complaint is that although I really liked the storyline, it doesn't seem to follow Poe's vision, so I'll ask again, Why does Amax insist on hanging onto ERS's apron strings? They obviously have a creative writing team, so why not take a leap of faith and allow them to write a brand new series? It seems to me that they are trying so hard to remaster the oldies by completely revamping the plots, so why not go all the way?
The Hidden Object Scenes are just okay, nothing spectacular, nothing really new. There are Interactive List finds, Keywords in Sentence finds, Progressive Interactive finds, and several Zoom Zone HOP's where you are tasked with finding 5 Fragments to receive an inventory item.
The Mini-Games I will admit are pretty easy to solve, even on the Hard difficulty setting, but I don't really care how hard or easy puzzles are, as long as they are fun, and I enjoyed several of them. Below are brief descriptions of some of the games you'll encounter during the demo:
1-Slide buttons to correct positions according to clue shown.
2-Drag latch through symbol without touching borders.
3-Match both card sections correctly within their categories.
4-Select all pictured items to receive the safe code.
5-Turn safe wheel to the correct numbers shown on the clue.
6-Use numbered buttons to push tokens into place.
7-Click when both tokens are aligned (progressive speed)
8-Navigate through a dark maze, picking up and using items.
This Collector's Edition version has 6 Wallpapers, 8 Concept Art pictures, 5 Screensavers, 4 Music Soundtracks, 12 Movie Videos, 16 re-playable Mini-Games, 12 re-playable Hidden Object Scenes, 16 Achievements to earn, 26 Morphing Objects, 9 Collectible Illusionist Cards, 5 Main Chapters + Bonus Chapter and a built-in Strategy Guide, enjoy!

Short game! Good try but does not meet the standards of prior Edgar Allen Poe's.
The puzzles if you can call them that, I think of them as a nuisance, where one must drag through a worm like shape without touching the sides, for this neurologically challenged woman well, never going to happen. Think of something else please!

It begins, as many of the Dark Tales. Dupin has written a note for you, in which he tells you in short, where to meet and what you’ll have to expect. Meeting point is the Pendulum House. A good friend of Dupin, Zula, has been threatened lately. As a medium and illusionist, she has foreseen her own death even, but Dupin and you shall protect her.
You are in front of the house now, Dupin is nowhere to be seen. A knock at the door, the butler opens, asks for your invitation. Tonight a special performance of Zula and her partner is scheduled. Through te window you are able to see something strange: Dupin is shooting at a man. Part of the show? When you finally are inside the house, Zula enters the room, vanishes in blue smoke the next moment and reapears a second later – magic. But then she is hit by a dart and falls to the floor, dead. Obviously it was her partner, who hit her, he escapes the room instantly. Dupin goes after him. Left behind are you, with the task of helping Dupin. He is soon overpowered by the illusionist and taken down into a cellar of an old building near Pendulum House. Pursuit is not easy, you have to overcome a lot of obstacles.
They are presented in minigames and puzzles, both easy as well as more challenging. One puzzle is a maze – nicely done and not too easy. HOS vary but most are lists.
Finally in the cellar, you will be able to strike the illusionist and one step before setting free the bound Dupin, he just stands up, takes the pistol and aims at you: ‘Surprise, my friend, in this case the killer is me.’ A twist, not to be foreseen. It gives the game an unusual direction. If this weren’t enough, you find yourself down at the bottom of a pit in this cellar. So, is this game in the EAP series in the end closer to the original plot of Poe’s literary template?

Another entry in the Dark Tales series has arrived. I can not tell you how much I wish I could have recommended the game. Sadly, while it functions as a game, it is not on the level we've come to expect from DT games. After playing the demo, I can only say that this is not a buy for me. I strongly suggest you try the Demo before you purchase it.
In The Pit and the Pendulum, You are going to meet Dupin at a magic show in a private home. Guests are there by invitation only and Dupin has yours. You are going to join him as he strives to protect an old friend, Zula, one of the performers. She has received threats upon her life and has foreseen her death. She has appealed to Dupin for help.
Good stuff: There are the usual assortment of HOPs and mini-games/puzzles along with a story that bears one of Edgar Allen Poe's most famous titles and has little to nothing to do with his tale. The CE bling assortment includes collectible cards for the characters and morphing objects.
Bad stuff: Same ol' complaints - missteps and logic fails abound. At a crowded party, the fire extinguisher is locked to the wall with two amulets that must be found before you can take it.
After you and Dupin enter a room where a prime suspect was locked in with the doorman, Matt, the "bad guy," Jacob, Zula's partner, jumps through a window into the garden. Dupin goes after him just before a security gate clangs down. You must find three masks to add to the one in place on the gate to raise it, but only after you solve still another puzzle. By the time you've run back and forth retrieving the other masks from safe, cabinet, and trunk, using a seeming unending supply of amulets, there seems little point in rushing after Dupin and Jacob. Fortunately they are still fighting in the garden. You catch up in time to have Jacob hurtle a poison gas canister at you and you see him drag off Dupin as you pass out. You regain consciousness to find that the secret passage they went through can be opened when you find four statuettes.
So you trek back and forth again. Unfortunately the mini-games/puzzles are quite easy and with the light weight story, there just does not seem to be much incentive to purchase the game.
Please try the Demo. Don't take my word for the necessity - believe the reviewer who lamented not checking it out before his disappointing purchase of this game.
I can't recommend what I will not be purchasing. I miss the early DT games and wish the Devs would just start a new series and stop abusing E.A.P.

This game is said to be based on a poem by Edgar Allan Poe. I actually checked out that poem, and the game is nothing like the poem at all. In fact, it seems to be made out of whole cloth! This game is said to be based on a poem by Edgar Allan Poe. I actually checked out that poem, and the game is nothing like the poem at all. In fact, it seems to be made out of whole cloth! A complete fabrication with little or no relation to the claimed poem. So that was rather annoying itself. But then, the game does not make much sense either. The storyline is somewhat choppy, and parts of it really don't make any sense at all. For example, at one point, we are shot at in a room with a well; the next second, we find ourselves in a dungeon. So how did we end up there? Did we fall through the well? Either way, we should have been injured, yet we are left without a single scratch! So what exactly did happen anyway?!
As if the storyline was not bad enough, the twist from the main game to the bonus chapter is worse. We are left with one impression at the end of the main game only to be told something different in the bonus chapter. This should serve as a warning to players who like to purchase only the standard edition of games! But what a cheap trick to get folks to buy the Collector's Edition to see what is the real, whole story!
I should note that the graphics were pretty good, as usual; as was the familiar Dark Tales theme music. And, yes, there were at least a couple of very good puzzles in the game. But the Hidden Object scenes were just too simplistic, and the Achievements were rather silly. In fact, players will have a hard time figuring out what they even need to do to get some of those Achievements!
In short, this game was quite disappointing on a lot of levels. Sure, if you would like to play a game without much attention to the story or achievements, you might enjoy this game. Otherwise, it is just another addition to a growing line of disappointments in the Dark Tales series. Show less
