Anna Gray and the Grim Tales series return with game sixteen – The Nomad. This long-standing favorite series with many gamers is also one with which I happen to have a love-hate relationship. Some of the earlier games had a tendency to be what some might consider a bit gritty but the later games have been far more to my liking. The Nomad happens to fall on the “love” side of the scale for me. From the moment I began playing I found myself involved in what I consider to be one of the better stories of the series.
I generally am fairly outspoken about the lack of a “true custom mode” in games and this one does not allow the gamer to set their preference for the Hint and Skip times. I happen to believe that customization should offer an open-ended scale for those times.
There is no need to recap the story as you can find that information on the game’s home page and when you play the demo. I enjoyed the storyline in the game and it is very well told as you progress with the gameplay.
When the game begins we have the general task to find items that we need to open either HOP scenes or Puzzles. Although the presentation of the HOPS might not be for everyone, I loved them and enjoyed finding the items, even the ones that were well-concealed. There is some variety in the HOPS but most are presented in the list find style that I enjoy the most. As much as I enjoyed the HOPS, I found the Puzzles to be even better. The puzzles might seem easy but they are still excellent and include many of my old-time favorites beginning with the one where we need to move the tiles to open a lock. This particular puzzle is easier than it has been in other games but I still enjoyed it. Of course The Nomad wouldn’t be a game from this developer if we didn’t find a missing zipper pull. Whenever I come across the missing zipper pull I have to chuckle because I know so many gamers hate having to open a case where one is missing.
With several of the last Grim Tales games we have the addition of Anna’s deceased father Richard whose skull is tagging along to help Anna solve each case. I don’t know many people who have an attachment to carting dad’s skull everywhere they go but Richard does add levity to the game. It took me a few games to get used to Richard but he has definitely grown on me and I think he is a needed element in the game. Some might think of Richard as a gimmick but he does provide some help when needed without being too intrusive.
The game has six chapters and I actually consider it to be a long game but that is because I don’t rush to see how fast I can get to the finish line. For me the enjoyment of playing is seeing every little detail in each scene and reading all of the news clippings or slips of paper that are found. CE games are my favorite since I love finding all of the collectibles and morphing objects. Yes many of the items are easy to find but not all of them jump right out at me. Another thing that I enjoy about The Nomad is that there is backtracking between the scenes. I don’t particularly care to pick up a hammer and then glance at the wall and find a nail that I should remove from a board immediately upon finding the hammer or any other tool. I love having a large inventory and then having to remember where I might need to use one of the items. Some might consider this to be a time-filler but I think it makes for a better game and is no more of a time-filler than having to play a puzzle in order to use an item.
Grim Tales: The Nomad is a wonderful game and perfect for the way I like to play. I purchased the game almost immediately and have had no regrets. The gameplay is entertaining and the storyline is excellent. I own every Grim Tales game since the series began with The Bride, and I often replay some of them each year. Even though Grim Tales: The Nomad is one I enjoy, please try the demo to see is it is a game that you will enjoy as well. Happy gaming! Show less

But wonderfully the voiceovers, special effects, and the soundtrack were incredibly harmonious making for an enjoyable experience. The HO scenes were varied with many as list items which I found relaxing as the music was soothing and the graphics nice to search through. The puzzles were varied as well with some harder than others. The storyline was well thought out and very logical from one scene to the next. I rarely had to use the hint button as the flow was keen. This long running series is still going strong and if you're new to Grim Tales I highly suggest you play them all! Cheers... Show less

In this story, Anna finds a long lost relative and looks to the past to clear his crimes.
It was a little shorter than I wanted it to be, but otherwise it was a great story. The hidden object and puzzle scenes were nice and simple. You can never go wrong with Grim Tales!

Fun game to travel to the past and right the wrongs for the museum robberies. Dear old Dad is once again helping but he isn't too bad this time. The graphics are very well done and the mini-puzzles are pretty easy.

I found this game to be pretty good and interesting. The game play was good and it killed a windy afternoon.
First the graphics. I have most all of these games and have played them over and over. The graphics in this one is not up to the same standards as those in previous games. They belong more in a cartoon in your Sunday paper than in a game. I liked the overall picture quality and the sound was very well done especially the voice overs. Richard sounded more like his old self although not quite as funny as in previous games.
Hidden objects were very well done and clear for the most part. Of course I didn't like the puzzles. Never do and probably never will. These were way past my patience level and some I just couldn't figure out what to do. I used the custom setting so I didn't have to wait long for the skip button to fill.
Others have gone into the story in depth so I won't. However, this is where I have a problem with this game. I got pretty lost in the story. It still stayed together, but for instance, in one scene Anna says this boy looks familiar and then all of a sudden, without any explanation I could see, he's her long lost nephew. It just didn't tie together and that is just one instance.
This is a good little game and I do recommend it. Don't take my word for it. Play the demo, it's pretty comprehensive for a change and will give you a good idea about what the game is like.
Happy gaming!! Show less

Demo Only on SE version
The museum where Louisa Gray, works at has been robbed of a valuable artifact, in broad daylight during normal business hours, yet no one seems to remember any details! Louisa has asked her sister to investigate the crime scene after the police come up empty-handed because the robber seems to have a unique paranormal ability to create vivid illusions. Anna Gray can travel back in time, with nothing more than a personal item, she can manipulate time itself to stand still. This particular case, however, hits a little too close to home as she makes a surprising discovery linking the robbery to none other than a Gray family member!
I liked this game, and it's leaps and bounds better than The Hunger! Grim Tales has always been one of my all-time favorite series, even though it got a bit weird with the whole daddy-Richard-skull in my purse scenario. In the CE version, most of the scenes have a Morphing Object, and the staple Grim Tales Character statues and Jigsaw Puzzle pieces within Zoom Zones have returned. (CE version only) The Morphs are a bit too large and morph a bit too fast to make them challenging, and the puzzle pieces aren't very challenging either because the zoom zones they are located within won't close automatically until you click on it. I don't see the point in having to find jigsaw puzzle pieces to get 3 Screensavers if you don't actually get to assemble the jigsaw? I do wish Elephant would give us the option to do away with the time-consuming, extremely annoying, "Task Completed, New Task" Banner that shows up constantly throughout the game, you can't click on anything until it's done!!!! PLEASE :)
I think Elephant did a fantastic job with the Mini-Games. They have included games for all levels of players and I enjoyed most of them. I do prefer to solve mini-games that make you think, especially ones that make you strategize or plan several steps in advance. Games don't have to be mind-boggling, to be fun! Below are brief descriptions of some of the games I liked during the game:
1-Use direction arrows and rotation gears to place dinosaurs correctly.
2-Swap & rotate pipes to allow the liquid to flow through all points.
3-Recreate 3 different shapes by rotating each partial shape to change the projection.
4-Click directional arrows on each token to slide into the color-coded slots using other tokens as bumpers.
5-Flip 2 gears at a time to reveal matching pairs for each symbol shown in the center.
6-Use directional arrows & push all lock pins up by selecting rods in the middle.
7-Swap small tiles until each large tile displays a complete image & use arrows to move the finished tiles to their matching symbol.
The Hidden Object Scenes are mostly Listed or Interactive List Finds but there are also Silhouetted Shape Finds while scrolling through 3 camera monitor scenes, Keywords in Sentence Finds on 3 different book pages, Uncovering Matching Pairs, Multiples of the same Object Finds and Returning Objects into the Scene. There are only 9 Main Hidden Object Scenes, but there are 7 Smaller Zoom Zone HOP's of various types within the main game and 4 regular and 1 zoom zone HOP's in the CE Bonus Chapter.
The CE version Bonus Chapter takes place shortly after the main game's time-frame. You play as Jared who finds himself trapped by his own souls' dark side. Richard tells him to visit 3 distorted personal memories to collect 3 soul shard's which will let him return to the real world. There are 5 Mini-Games, 4 main Hidden Object Scenes and 1 Zoom Zone Hidden Object Scene within the somewhat long Bonus Chapter. There are 9 Morphing Objects, and 4 Character Statues remaining, and you'll complete the final Screensaver when you pick up the last 12 Zoom Zone Jigsaw Puzzle Pieces.
The Collector's Edition version has 8 Wallpapers, (why do they always plaster a character on them, can't we just have the scenery view?) 8 Concept Art pictures, 3 Screensavers (collect Jigsaw Puzzle Pieces to reveal 2-12 piece jigsaws and 1-24 piece jigsaw) 5 Music Soundtracks, 23 Achievements to Earn, an Archive Room with 13 re-playable Hidden Object Scenes and 13 re-playable Mini-Games, a Secret Room to search for Morphing Objects in the scenes, 12 Collectible Gray Family Character Statues, 48 Zoom Zone Jigsaw Puzzle Pieces to get 3 Screensavers (auto-complete, you don't get to assemble them!?) 27 Morphing Objects, 6 Main Chapters +Bonus Chapter and a built-in Strategy Guide.

Can't recommend this one. I don't understand the great reviews but maybe they played the CE. The game was way too easy and had so many of the same old items you see in every other game. Nothing new here. Was more than ready for it to end.
