I too don't understand the bad reviews.
I enjoyed the hidden object parts a lot.
You had to interact with them. Maybe some people don't like that, I do.
I felt it was better then some of the other haunted legends.
I was passing on this because of the reviews but decided to give it a chance and was glad I did.
For me, it was a solid 4 stars
I recommend this game!

The least one can say is that this game has caused some controversy among viewers with almost an equal amount of 1 star and 5 star ratings (cf: reviews of the CE).

That Call of Despair is neither that bad nor that excellent.
If you ignore the story which is kind of weird and not very coherent, if you don't mind tasks that have no originality and tend to be boring, you might find some interest in the minigames which are all pretty simple, even in hard mode, and therefore ideal for beginners.
I have no idea how the game evolves after the demo. What I saw during that hour of gameplay didn't exactly tickle my fancy.
One minigame, for instance is quite funny (and ridiculous): you have to fight the bad guy who, depending on your actions, will punch you several times. LOL.
Finding a matchbox and filling it with...matches is not what I call a challenge.
Being imposed a Match 3 as a minigame is, for me a big no-no. Match 3s have no place in this kind of game.
I will let you discover the rest, the HOs (which, fortunately, are not cluttered or frequent), the use of trinkets and items that often defies logic, and of course the traditional skulls that no dev team seems to be able to do without.
All in all, even though I am giving it 3 stars (because there is no other alternative), it's a 2.5 star game for me: 1 for the graphics (which are excellent), 1 for the making of (work always deserves some sort of reward), 0.5 for the puzzles.
I can only recommend this game to beginners, and of course, strongly encourage you to play the demo before making any decision.

I'm not even going to attempt to give a storyline synopsis, there is no storyline to synopt. (no it's not a real word) I had a coupon code that was going to expire so I bought the CE version, I prolly should have just let the coupon expire:( The storyline is utterly ridiculous, they just don't have any "new" plot ideas so they just wing it as they go. Amax hasn't released any new series games so they just keep plugging away at the same handful of series offered since the beginning of time. In the beginning, these games had fresh plots with just enough of an edge to please any crowd, but the beginning is in the rearview mirror folks, the middle flew by about 8 years ago, the end actually occurred a few years back, everyone got the memo, accept for Amax.
The CE collectibles are rather confusing. The SG clearly states that there are Collectibles AND Morphing Objects, but the Collectibles are Jigsaw Puzzle pieces that Morph. Then I discover a Casket that claims it holds Crystals located throughout the game, so I thought they were collectibles, only to discover I need them for the final scene. I have a thing about achieving all available achievements so I read them carefully before starting the game. One of the CE achievements says Make 6 unnecessary moves in the game...what the hot fudge cake does that mean? I played the entire game trying to figure out how to make one unnecessary move, much less 6. Surely I should have achieved the achievement for the simple fact that I completed this worthless game?
There are 13 Hidden Object Scenes and 5 Zoom Zone scenes and I actually found some of them to have well-hidden items or interesting interactions. Once again Amax repeated the HOP's twice on every location, which makes them so boring a second time around, and quite frankly it seems lazy to me. There are Interactive Listed Item Finds, Silhouetted Shape Finds, Multiples of the same Object Finds, Matching Pair Finds, Description Finds, Related Item Finds, Fragment Finds, Misplaced Item Finds, and Keywords in Sentence Finds. At least there is a good variety, but there are no alternate mini-games available. I've said this before, I'll say it again if devs would offer a mini-game option in place of the Hidden Object Scenes AND a hidden object scene option in place of the mini-games, wouldn't it suit everyone's tastes and increase sales?
There are a whopping 25 Mini-Games, most of which were utterly boring, or simply mindless tasks such as dragging a ball through a gazillion line shapes. I'm going to try very hard to list some of the games I didn't find too boring:
1~Place & align all tokens using directional arrows to direct the moonlight beam. That's about it folks.
The Collector's Edition Bonus Chapter takes place immediately after the investigation when the Cardinal asks you to investigate how Saint Germain discovered the Well of Souls and its powers, by "recalling the investigation." This is an average length Bonus Chapter across 8 scene locations with 12 additional mini-games and 6 hidden object scenes. You will pick up the remaining 16 Morphing Jigsaw Puzzle Pieces to complete the collection jigsaw.
The Collector's Edition version has 6 Wallpapers, 7 Concept Art Pictures, 5 Screensavers, 8 Movie Video Cutscenes, 4 Music Soundtracks, 12 Achievements, 13 Re-playable Hidden Object Scenes, 13 Re-playable Mini-Games, 52 Morphing Puzzle Pieces, 5 Main Chapters +Bonus Chapter, and a Built-in Strategy Guide. Haunted Legends The Call of Despair is not the most discouraging game to be released this year but it certainly runs close. Just when I thought that this developer was finally getting it together and was making its way back as a top producer of some great games, today’s game rather dashed that hope on my part. When the first Haunted Legends game was released eight years ago it earned a 4.3 star rating from gamers and it was a hit game. I personally loved that game so I was very disappointed with today’s new Haunted Legends game. I’m only hoping that if this series is to continue, there will be some fresh storylines introduced to keep us enjoying this series in the years ahead.
There is not too much to write about this game and I was raised with the adage of if you have nothing good to say then don’t say it. At this point I think I have said all there is to say about a game that exemplifies the meaning of despair. When I played the demo of the game I was surprised to find that it was no better than the beta when there could have been a lot of room for improvement before the final game was released.
The good thing about the game is the graphics that are excellent and at times quite beautiful. There is no other developer, IMHO, who can artistically render such beautiful characters in its games. I only wish that great graphics were enough to keep me wanting more but since they aren’t I decided to give this game a pass.
Had it not been for the boring and tiresome gameplay I might have taken the plunge and purchased the full game but I was simply afraid to waste money on a game that really didn’t hold any appeal for me. As always, I encourage you to try the demo and decide whether Haunted Legends The Call of Despair is a game that you will enjoy. Happy gaming! Show less
