This is a game with a really good - and unpredictable - storyline. It has a bit of a retro feel, due to things like the antique car, I think. It isn't your run-of-the-mill HOPA, either. It's more of an adventure game, and it doesn't hold your hand, which I love, but some apparently don't. I've only used the hint in a couple of HOS, so can't comment on its usefulness for other things.
There is no map, so you will need your sneakers. I am used to that, since I'm an adventure player. I generally don't use the maps, anyway. You will also need your brain. You will either need to remember a lot or take notes - the journal isn't very helpful in that regard.
The infrequent HOS are list type and pretty easy, though some will require some interaction. Then there are scenes full of morphing objects that will charge your crystal. Some of them are pretty hard to spot.
Minigames/puzzles are not out of the ordinary, but I found them to be fun, for the most part - except for the one that you have to rotate "rings" of squares for. I hate those as much as picture sliders, LOL.
Yes, the game, like MOST games, was made in another country, in another language. Localization could be better, but I didn't find it really disturbing. The acting was so poor it was funny - probably some of the devs themselves - but the video clips were short and moved the story along. For me, story is at least half the game, so I enjoyed this way of telling it.
I'm hoping you cannot go through the portal if you haven't finished up on the island, because once you go through, you can't backtrack like you were able up to that point...
The music is in keeping, though it can get tiresome. One scene with whispers sounds like they are saying "coffee, coffee..." Graphics are clear and sharp. The scenery is pretty realistic - until you go through the portal. Then it is pure fantasyland. At least it isn't eye-assaulting pink and purple or blue neon.
I give it a 10 for NO helpers, fuzzy or otherwise. And tools stay in inventory as long as you will need them, a big plus. It has a pretty creepy atmosphere, and some quite surprising moments, too.
This isn't going to be the game of the year, but it's a good, solid adventure-lite, and a worthy stand-alone SE. I have just about quit buying the new, shiny CEs because they are all alike. This one is different, and it is quite refreshing.
I am patiently waiting for Maze: Subject 360 to come out, filling the time with Fantasy Mosaics and Indies from other sites. (Grim Fandango has been re-released!) I am tired of candy-colored games and all the hand-holding. I play to keep my brain engaged, not to veg out. But, to each their own. Try this, give it a chance. You may find you like it, too. What a surprise! I seldom give a main page review, but this game is getting poor reviews I felt I had to add to the good ones. There will be a few slight SPOILERS below, about the puzzle mechanics and what the HOS are.
I love the mix of live action scenes (the first is long, but really set the scene well, so well what happens came as a big shock to me!) and the well-done graphics. When lightning lights up a scene for an instant you see your shadow. Great detail.
The HOS are fun. Interactive lists, and recharge the crystal through finding morphing objects, unlisted. That took some time. Unfortunately, sparkles indicate their location even on the Expert mode. PUZZLES are some simple tasks (cutting out jigsaw puzzles pieces, putting the puzzle together, then painting the whole). Play a concentration game and move branches from top to the one on the bottom to clear a space.
Some of the tasks are so well done. You know the ol' tape up the electrical cord task? Well, here it takes a sensible and logical first step most games leave out.
True, the translation is quite poor at times, but I can ignore that in the case of small developers. It's when the "big guys" get it wrong it bothers me.
If you want to play without thought, following a map from place to place, to rely on a hint feature to tell you what to do and where to go, then play today's game (or any of the "big guy" games that are becoming indistinguishable from each other). If you want something different, something that will make you do the figuring out, then give this one a try. Show less

Since most computer games aren't made here in the U.S., people should remember that they are created in the language of the developers and then translated into English. I Know a Tale appears to have been made in Russia, so the live actors are speaking Russian and that's why the actors' lip don't sync with what they're saying. I Know a Tale appears to have been made in Russia, so the live actors are speaking Russian and that's why the actors' lip don't sync with what they're saying. This is obvious to me, but I guess most reviewers here aren't aware of that.
This is a fun little game with live actors in the cut scenes. The story line is well written. Even if it is poorly translated in spots, I had no trouble understanding what was happening. Graphics are bright and clear. This is more of a light adventure game, so there are not tons of hidden object scenes or loads of puzzles. There was no map because you really don't need one. The music perfectly matched the tone of the game and the voice acting was fine.
This is not one of those stressful games that has you scrambling to find morphing objects, collectibles or other unecessary achievements. I Know a Tale is a simple, straightforward game that you can relax with while enjoying the story. So grab a latte or beverage of choice and enjoy! Show less

I can't quite put my finger on why this game was so good. There was an awful lot of backwards and forwards which normally I hate but somehow I was so into the story that it didn't matter. I didn't find the game too short. It was just about right. Sometimes if games are too long I get bored with them and they sit on my desktop for ages but this one was done and dusted in a couple of days. I don't ...Show more

I didn't find the game too short. It was just about right. Sometimes if games are too long I get bored with them and they sit on my desktop for ages but this one was done and dusted in a couple of days. I don't play continually so it wasn't that long. I loved the weird translations which made me laugh out loud and the music wasn't intrusive as it sometimes can be on these games. I probably completed about 95% of the puzzles without skipping which is good for me and some of them were quite different to the usual ones. It was quite nice having a game where the language wasn't English and I would have preferred to hear the original as there were subtitles too. It did have an old fashioned feel to it and I can understand that some people wouldn't like it but for me it was top notch. Show less

Definitely underrated... IF you enjoy unique game style and GOOD storyline in more of an unguided adventure mode THIS game is for YOU. Lots of creativity went into this one and I loved the live actor angle, reminiscent of the older, must loved classic Mystery Tracker series [tho I am not saying it has as much gameplay value, at all, it stands on it's own and is well worth the price tag].

As reflected in low ratings thus far, it is obviously not for the average HO gamer; yet if you love INDI style adventure lite and can think outside of the box, definitely give it a whirl.

I Know a Tale is an intriguing hidden object game that aims to provide players of all levels with a classical experience rather than following the trends of most modern games of the genre. It’s an overall really well designed game and does an excellent job of showing all its players what makes this hidden object games so great. When you start the game off for the first time, you’ll be shown a beautiful cinematic that’s amazing to look at but is mainly there to give you a bit of detail regarding the plot of the game. After this intro, the gameplay will start and you’ll be asked whether you’d like to go through an interactive tutorial. The tutorial, like most tutorial sequences nowadays, is pretty well-built and does an excellent job of explaining all it needs to without taking up too much time so it’s pretty spot-on. The plot of the game is based off a mysterious happening that has occurred within the town that’s left people puzzled. Two people walk into a store to try and rob it but shortly afterwards they end up petrified and the shopkeeper is seen fleeing the scene while nailing the basement down to prevent anyone else from accessing it. You play the role of the town’s sheriff and must figure out how such an incident occurred and bring whoever caused it to justice. Not a simple task! The gameplay of I Know a Tale, as mentioned before, is based around the concepts of traditional hidden object games rather than modern ones and this coupled with its near perfect execution makes for a really enjoyable experience. The hidden object scenes are mostly the list based kinds and they have really good object placement to make them quite challenging while remaining fair, there are many of these scenes in the game and pretty much every single one is designed brilliantly which is a really impressive. The Puzzle sequences, while they might not feel like the traditional kind, have their own charms because they’re rather complex but ultimately really satisfying to solve as the f open up a significant portion of the game world for you to explore and make further progress in. Overall there aren’t any technical issues either so the game feels extremely smooth and a delight to play. In terms of visuals, the art-style of I Know a Tale is pretty traditional as it follows a rather dark color scheme and has a similarly dark setting. This isn’t to say that it looks bad however because this setting looks pretty amazing thanks to all the detail that’s been put into it ranging from dynamic elements in the environments to the high quality textures that you see everywhere. Cut-scenes are a massive plus point for this game because rarely, if ever, can a cut-scene deliver the cinematic experience that the ones here can. I would love to see more Standard Editions that are this well made. Kudos to Big Fish and these fine developers!!! Show less
