Dark Tales: Edgar Allan Poe's The Tell Tale Heart converts this classic story into a game, where you are the assistant to the ever so famous Detective Auguste Dupin. On September 5, 1851, a woman was brutally murdered and ritualistically hung on a tree for all to see. Detective Dupin (and you of course) must must piece together evidence of the crime. There's just one witness to the crime, Katrina, who was working that evening "due to her current financial situation" if you catch my drift. She remembers only one thing about the murderer...His Blood red eyes!

If you are a fan of Dark Tales games which are based from the Edgar Allan Poe classics, you might want to consider the Collector's Edition which has several Collectible Cards throughout the game. There are 6 cards for each game, Premature Burial, Gold Bug, The Black Cat, The Mystery of Marie Roget, The Fall of the House of Usher, and The Mask of the Red Death, finding all cards in all the groups will unlock bonus Mini Games, when you unlock the crystal skulls.

You have packed your bags wisely, and throughout the game you will need to produce and use the items it contains, a good transport map (all the good detectives have one) your ID, a purse with money (how 'bout that, I don't have to look around for abandoned coins) and Examination Goggles with special lenses (of which the blue lens breaks but I'm fortunate to find a replacement of the exact color I need all wrapped up in a nice wooden box, what luck!) There are plenty of complex inventory items as well, which has become the norm in most HOPA games lately.

The Hidden Object Scenes are scarce, only 10 in the entire game. The first one involves interacting with things in the scene to find all the necessary items to pack your detective's bag. Most of the HOP's involve this same type of scene interactions, as you are tasked with finding clues to open items, and moving objects around so that you can piece together fragments to complete an item.

There are more Mini Games than HOP's but in my opinion some Mini Games could qualify for an HOP. Below are brief descriptions of some of the Mini Games you'll encounter, all of which are pretty easy to solve:
1) Find and select pairs of crime scene photos that correspond to the story being told.
2) Complete the image by selecting keys to rotate disks.
3) Select the correct lenses to examine a body to coincide with the notes shown.
4) Drag Mask halves to their matching half.
5) Assemble the picture using buttons to rotate groups of images.

The Collector's Edition has 12 Movie Videos, 7 Wallpapers, 11 Concept Art pictures, 4 Music Soundtracks, 36 Collectible Edgar Allan Poe game cards, 13 replayable Mini Games, 10 replayable Hidden Object Puzzles, 12 Achievements to earn, a built in Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter, enjoy! The short demo was long enough to get the idea of this game. It keep you busy solving puzzle one after another, they HO in the demo were not your typical list of items rather a puzzle of finding items and placing them within the puzzle.

The story is nothing new. Bad guy killing a woman, don't know if more bodies will pile up as during the demo there was solving death of only one woman. Your job as detective to solve this mystery.
It makes you think, it makes you want to play more, but it is definitely not a usual HOG.
Music and sounds are OK. Dialogues are spoken and as expected from that era of story, in decent English.
You can choose difficulty of game in the beginning, adjust the time of hint/skip recharge.
It seems like a good game, I was disappointed of the length of the demo only 30 minutes or till you get to a certain point in the game, I wonder if it suggests that the game is short, I do not know as I played only the demo.
As usual try it yourself and decide. I do recommend this game. Show less

I play all of these games and I love the Edgar Allen Poe tie ins on the storylines. I did a small squee when I saw Telltale heart as it has a lot of potential.
Sadly, this really is almost like the game was made by someone else. The flow is off, it feels perfunctory - gaming by the numbers - and it's *really* short. As in, I started playing at 7pm - included 2 toilet breaks, I was done by 8:30 - ...Show more

In principle, the game owns all staff, what a good game characterized. Difficulty can be customized. It is well designed. Animation is pretty good, language, noises and music are fine. It has an interactive map. There are some nice details along the game. The tasks are logical.

I am playing without helping texts, thus it was challenging enough to be interesting.

According to the short time, you need to play through, it is not worth its price. Show less

i enjoyed this game. the graphics and ho/puzzle scenes were well done and different from the usual. i bought the game after the demo, but i'm sorry i did because i finished the game in about an hour. there is only one chapter left and the game ends rather abruptly at the end of the chapter. i would recommend this game if you have a game credit because of the length. there are no extras like ...Show more

I have loved all the games in the series...up to now :(

I read the previous reviews and decided to make my own mind up. Most of them said it was too short, well, I was ok with the length. Nothing spectacular but it was ok. I had got it on an offer day so hadn't paid full price.

What really bugged me though was the pathetic ending. It just finished mid air. No resolution and I did not see it ...Show more

I was thinking this game would be good for Halloween. It had more horror than some Halloween games this year. Some hops had a jack o' lantern and sunflowers.

I didn't like examing the body. I skipped most puzzles. I did like that I wasn't lock out of any scene. It has 5 chapters and I was surprised that I changed character late in the game and then the map was gone for that portion. It's a ...Show more
